A unit of Panasonic Corp aims to boost sales of product lines in Bangladesh as the Japanese electronics goliath seeks to wager on the government's digital push, an official said Saturday.

Singapore-based Panasonic System Communications has teamed up with Emem Sytesms Ltd, a concern of the country's conglomerate MM Ispahani Group, to market video conferencing and security systems in this country of 150 million population, Koji Yamada, a director with the unit, said in an interview.

The Osaka-based $100 billion group's unit has a wide array of products including office document, communication equipment, security systems, and digital signage.

Mr Yamada said his company is targetting what it calls "Next-5" that also includes frontier markets such as Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Laos and Cambodia.

He noted that the company's robust market share in PABX (Private Automated Branch Exchange) has boosted its confidence to move into selling cutting-edge video conferencing and security systems.

He estimated that the company would ring up sales of $5.0 million in the next two to three years in this segment, notwithstanding the regulatory hurdles.

"Our target is government agencies and multinationals operating in Bangladesh," he said, adding the demand is growing for video-conferencing as companies around the world are seeking to cut corporate travel costs in view of the global crisis.

"Many Japanese and Korean companies are operating here. They want to communicate with their head offices through this system," he said, adding the demand for such systems is growing.

But he saw regulations and poor network infrastructure as the major roadblocks that

could crimp initial market penetration.

Officials at Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) said companies wishing to communicate overseas using the video-conferencing system must secure approval for each time they use.

"This discourages companies to use this. (But) we believe this will be resolved sooner or later," the Panasonic official, now in the city to launch the system today, said.

Despite the less-developed network, Mr Yamada said the video conferencing system would gain ground. "We've carried out survey to assess the market potential," he added.

The expansion spree reflects the relative stability and growth potentials in Asia's frontier markets such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

It also reflects the Japanese electronics and home appliance major's business and marketing strategy toward new growth poles in Asia Pacific as demand in traditional markets is sapping.

The present government's mantra on 'Digital Bangladesh' means information and communication technology will be "much more common than in the past," said Mr Yamada, who moved to the city state in 2006 after serving with the company's sales and marketing division for 15 years.

In Bangladesh, he said his company's PABX sales have doubled to $1.0 million so far this year from 2010.

"We expect to see growth doubling over the next five years not only for sales in telephony systems, but also for other segments," he told the FE.

The company's target is to sell IP (Internet Protocol) systems worth $3.7 million in five regional markets at the end of the year.

Although the company's market share is less than 10 per cent in security devices because of the availability of low-priced Chinese ones, the company official said customers are now seeking quality products.

The Japanese-born official said his company controls 40 per cent market share in communications systems in the Asia Pacific region that covers mainly Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and India.

"We're re-branding Panasonic on how it would be in 2018," he said about the Osaka-based $100 billion group's 100th anniversary.

The 68-year-old Ispahani group has interests in tea, textiles, jute, shipping, information technology, foods, travel and poultry.

Pressure mounts on SNB's Danthine over forex trade

ZURICH (Reuters) - Swiss National Bank board member Jean-Pierre Danthine faced growing criticism on Sunday, over transactions uncovered by an audit launched after central bank chief Philipp Hildebrand was forced to quit after a big currency trade by his wife.

Christoph Blocher, a senior figure in the right-wing Swiss People's Party who led calls in January for Hildebrand's head, told Der Sonntag newspaper Danthine might have to go too.

"We'll have to see whether Danthine can survive or not," Blocher told the newspaper, noting the audit had discovered Danthine had sold 126,000 euros ($165,300) for francs in 2010 shortly before the SNB stopped intervening to weaken the franc.

"He knew very well that the euro would lose value as soon as the national bank stopped its intervention," Blocher said.

When the audit was published on Wednesday, Danthine said he had never used privileged information for his personal benefit and that the trade was the result of his desire to remove all bank shares from his portfolio upon joining the central bank.

Danthine said he was aware that public opinion had become particularly sensitive to financial dealings by SNB board members but said he hoped he retained the public's confidence so he could continue to work in the interests of the central bank.

Auditor KPMG was asked to examine the personal financial transactions of the SNB's three-member board and their deputies after Hildebrand quit over a lucrative trade made by his wife weeks before the SNB set a cap on the franc's value on September 6.

KPMG revealed Danthine had made two foreign currency transactions that needed closer examination, but concluded he had not exploited confidential information for personal profit.

The other trade involved selling 197,674 euros for francs to pay into the SNB pension fund after Danthine joined the bank.

Der Sonntag quoted unnamed SNB insiders as saying Danthine might even have to step down on Wednesday, when the Swiss parliament is holding a special debate on the SNB and a day before the board holds its quarterly monetary policy meeting.

The SNB was not immediately available for comment on the report.

ETHICAL PERSON

After the audit, the SNB's supervisory bank council said it continued to have full confidence in Danthine. Council president Hansueli Raggenbass reiterated that view on Sunday.

"Danthine is an absolutely ethical person. This transaction was not about making money," Raggenbass told Der Sonntag, adding losing a second SNB board member would be "really not good".

Separately, the Tagesanzeiger daily on Saturday criticized Danthine's involvement in organizing lavish dinners to attract speakers to Lausanne University, where he was economics professor before joining the SNB in January 2010.

The newspaper quoted the SNB as saying Danthine was only working part-time at the university and had no official function at the time of the program under scrutiny.

Meanwhile, the SonntagsZeitung newspaper said the bank council would announce on Monday strict new regulations to limit personal financial transactions by the board's three members, their deputies and their partners.

The KPMG audit gave Thomas Jordan -- who took over as interim SNB head when Hildebrand resigned -- a clean bill of health, clearing the way for him to get the top job permanently.

The Swiss government said on Friday it would only make the appointment next month, despite coming under pressure to restore stability to the SNB as the franc flirts with the 1.20 per euro cap set to protect exporters from the currency's strength.

Artist Heizer's big rock rolls to Calif. museum

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rock stars are a common enough sight in Los Angeles but it's not often when a rock is the star.

Los Angeles residents are coming out to catch a glimpse of a massive boulder that arrived at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art before dawn Saturday, after lumbering across Southern California for the past week and a half.

It will become the centerpiece of acclaimed earth artist Michael Heizer's latest creation, "Levitated Mass."

"The sheer size of it is just impressive. The size of the rock, and the size of the undertaking," said Ron Dickson, 64, who drove down from Burbank.

The 340-ton hunk of granite, accompanied by an entourage of about 100 people, left a dusty quarry in Riverside on Feb. 28, chauffeured toward its destination by a specially built carrier as long as a football field.

The convoy made it to Wilshire Boulevard at around 4 a.m. Saturday, with hundreds of people looking on and museum officials updating its progress on Twitter. In its final mile, the moving crew paused to pose for photos in front of LACMA's "Urban Light" exhibit, before turning north on Fairfax Avenue, then east on West Sixth Street to its permanent home on the museum's north lawn.

Miranda Carroll, LACMA's communications director, described a collective sigh of relief among museum officials when the megalith finally arrived.

"It's here!" cheered Carroll, who admitted she didn't get much sleep as she followed the journey's last stretch.

As the sun came up, the sidewalks along the lawn were filled gawkers clutching coffee cups peering through a chain link fence. Five-year-old Ariel, who lives a block away, snapped photos with a digital camera.

"We wanted to see what the fuss was all about," Ariel's mom, Julieanne, said. "But not enough that we wanted to come in the middle of the night."

As it made a long, circuitous journey toward the museum that was aimed at avoiding narrow streets, low-slung bridges and pesky utility lines, it was cheered on by what became an audience of tens of thousands.

At one stop a man proposed to his girlfriend in front of the rock. Later, when it arrived in Long Beach, that city threw a block party that attracted thousands of revelers.

There were a couple of small bumps along the way, however.

Because of its size, the rock could only be moved late at night and in the early morning, stopping each day at pre-arranged locations.

Two days into its journey it had to pull up two miles short of its destination when a transmission in the engine of the vehicle pulling it became balky. It was parked partially in the roadway of a highway just down the street from a freeway entrance in Diamond Bar, giving passing motorists an exceptionally good view of it.

It got back on schedule the following day, but as it navigated its way through South Los Angeles earlier this week, movers discovered two unaccounted for palm trees blocking its path. They cut them down and proceeded on, promising the community they would eventually return to replace them. In the last few blocks, several parked cars had to be towed to allow the carrier to make the final turns, according to Carroll.

At the museum, the rock is to be placed over a 465-foot-long trench, where Heizer has promised that visitors who walk underneath will experience the illusion that it is floating above them.

The artist, noted for mammoth-scale works in which the earth itself becomes his palette, is perhaps best known for "City," a Mount Rushmore-sized creation he has been building near his home in the Nevada desert for decades. He has kept most people from seeing it, but photos that have surfaced show a number of huge, pyramid-like buildings, some as high as 80 feet, stretching across more than a mile of desert terrain.

He came up with the idea for "Levitated Mass" more than 40 years ago, then spent decades searching for the right rock to pull it together.

He finally found one six years ago in the two-story high, 340-ton megalith he located in Riverside, 60 miles from the museum.

Because of the rock's size it took museum officials months just to work out an acceptable route to take it on. They finally settled on a roundabout journey that carried it through 22 Southern California cities.

Elizabeth Kuder, an artist and admirer of Heizer's work, strolled over from her house a few blocks away to snap photos of the site. Kuder said she believes the journey itself was part of Heizer's vision, pointing out how from some angles the rock appeared to defy gravity even while on the truck.

"It seems that "levitated mass" began the moment they were able to lift the boulder off the ground," she said. "It was levitating above the streets as it traveled. It was something to see."

The project, anticipated to cost as much as $10 million, is being funded by well-heeled museum donors.

With the rock finally in place, museum officials hope it will be ready to be unveiled sometime in the late spring or early summer.

Thai Reinsurance expects 2012 loss on floods | Clegg Insurance ...

BANGKOK (Reuters)?Thai Reinsurance Public Co. Ltd. expects to post a net loss
for a second year in 2012 as the country?s leading reinsurer is hit by higher
provisions from flooding last year that have pushed up insurance premiums for
natural disasters, a top executive said.

Thai Re had estimated flood-related damage at 10-14 billion Thai baht
($325-455 million), of which about 6 billion was booked last year, Chief
Executive Surachai Sirivallop told Reuters.

?The floods will continue to affect us this year. No one knows the exact
number, but we should make a loss for another year and we should make a profit
next year,? Mr. Surachai said in an interview.

The company reported a net loss of 1.66 billion baht for 2011, the first
since it was founded 33 years ago.

Excluding the flood impact, Mr. Surachai said, the company made a profit of
1.03 billion baht, mainly due to rising premiums from life insurance and rising
fee incomes from insurance services.

He said Thai Re?s net premiums were expected to rise at a double-digit rate
this year, but not as high as last year?s surge of 30% in life insurance
premiums and 45% in non-life insurance.

In December, Standard & Poor?s downgraded Thai Re to reflect its risk
exposure to last year?s floods, which severely affected seven industrial estates
in central Thailand and caused supply disruptions for the global auto and
electronic sectors.

A Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S survey had expected the company to post a net
profit of 676 million baht for 2012.

Some analysts said the company should benefit from higher premium rates and
increased demand for reinsurers because operators need insurance to protect
assets from unexpected events despite rising insurance costs.

The insurance sector was estimated to post a loss of up to 350 billion baht
from flood-related claims, with local insurers hesitant to sell to companies
with operations in flood-hit areas, Mr. Surachai said.

Risk Assessment

Premiums have risen more than two-fold since the floods to levels higher than
in other natural disaster-prone countries such as Japan, where insurers take
into account greater risk from human error, Mr. Surachai said.

?Thailand is seen as a high-risk country after being low-risk for many years,
and risk premiums have jumped more than two-fold. Natural catastrophes may occur
once in 100 years, but human error can happen at any time,? Mr. Surachai said,
referring to criticisms of the government management of last year?s flooding.

Thai Re is in the process of selling a 21% stake to Canada-based Fairfax
Financial Holdings Ltd. for 2.23 billion baht as part of a plan to raise about 7
billion baht from a share offer to boost capital and cover flood-related losses.

?This will be enough to cover flood-related insurance claims and expand our
business,? said Mr. Surachai, an industry veteran and former executive of Hong
Kong-based AIG Reinsurance.

He added that Fairfax, which already owned 4% of Thai Re, would have two
board members but would not have a management role.

Mr. Surachai said he expected to see some consolidation in Thailand?s
insurance sector to maintain competitiveness as the country is due to liberalize
its financial sector in 2015.

?We are not keen to merge with others. We are strong enough to compete in the
domestic market,? he said, adding that some smaller Thai insurers may not
survive given their higher operating costs than foreign rivals.

At the midday trading break, Thai Re shares were down 2.75% after falling
4.4% to two-week low of 3.48 baht. The broad index was 0.9% higher.

Certain Beliefs Motivate Health Care Workers to Get Flu Shots

THURSDAY, March 8 (HealthDay News) -- The belief that a seasonal flu shot is effective is far more likely to convince health care workers to get vaccinated than reminding them it will help safeguard patients, a new study suggests.

In many developed countries, it's difficult to persuade frontline health care workers to get seasonal flu vaccinations in order to protect patients from the flu, the researchers noted.

To examine the issue more closely, the investigators reviewed 13 studies that included a total of nearly 85,000 health care workers in North America, Europe and Australia.

Overall, doctors were more willing than nurses to get a flu vaccination, according to the study published March 7 in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

The researchers identified a number of factors that had the strongest influence on health care workers' decision to get vaccinated. All of these factors were associated with a greater-than-double increase in flu vaccination: knowing the vaccine is effective; a willingness to prevent the spread of the flu virus; a belief that the virus is highly contagious and that prevention is important; having a family that is usually vaccinated; and convenient access to vaccination.

Factors that had little influence on health care workers' motivation to get vaccinated included: willingness to protect either themselves or patients at risk of complications if they caught the flu; previous experience with having the flu; being in contact with children; or having direct patient contact.

"Influenza vaccination will only be successful in [health care workers] if they are properly educated and if the vaccine is easily accessible," researchers led by Dr. Giedre Gefenaite, at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, concluded in a journal news release.

The study authors noted that many differences exist between seasonal flu and pandemic flu, but some of the pro-vaccination factors identified in this study may be important in a pandemic.

More information

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has more about seasonal flu vaccination.
