Miscues, Mistakes Cause Tornado Football To Slip On Homecoming Night

By: Jason Metko (NewsDakota.com)

?

OAKES (NewsDakota.com) The Oakes High School football team?s rythim was touch and go on homecoming night, and as a result, fell in overtime to the Milnor/North Sargent Bulldogs 28-26 on Friday night at Cummings Field.

The Bulldogs were on the board first in the second quarter, but Oakes scored the next twenty points, including a score as time expired in the first half. However, the Bulldogs, and head coach Eric Olson never diverged from their game plan, were able to force extra time, and scored on a two point conversion in the extra period to seal up the victory; after Oakes missed their point-after touchdown play.

?We just made too many mistakes tonight, and you can?t do that against a good time like the one we faced tonight.? said Oakes head coach Greg Dobitz. ?We did some things well, but there are still a lot of things we need to work on going forward.?

Oakes is now 4-2 and 3-2 in Region I play. The Tornadoes will try to get back on the winning track and earn a playoff spot next week when they head to Mayville, to battle Mayville-Portland/Clifford-Galesburg.

Vitamin D Deficiency Can Increase Risk of Heart Disease

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Copenhagen found that vitamin D may be an essential nutrient for protecting against heart disease. ?Researchers have thoroughly studied the effect that vitamin D plays in bone health. However, they haven?t spent as much time studying the effects it plays on heart health.

The researchers in Copenhagen sought for an answer this question.?Their study tracked more than 10,000 men and women throughout the country. Researchers tracked the amount of vitamin D they consumed and followed up with them over the course of nearly 30 years. They studied both the overall levels of vitamin D as well as the level of?calcidiol. Calcidiol is a plasma that plays a key role in storing vitamin D.

The team analyzed blood levels from patients that were drawn in the early 1980s. During the 29 year followup period, more than 3,000 patients developed coronary heart disease, more than 1,600 suffered from a heart attack and more than 6,700 died. They did a analysis and determined that a lower level of vitamin D was correlated with:

  • a 40% higher chance of developing coronary heart disease
  • a 64% higher risk of developing a heart attack
  • a 57% higher chance of shorter life expectancy
  • an 80% higher likelihood of suffering from a fatal heart attack arising from coronary heart disease

Researchers were surprised by the correlation between lower levels of vitamin D and a higher risk of developing certain forms of heart disease and have a lower life expectancy. They also were surprised that vitamin D fortification didn?t appear to reduce the likelihood of developing heart disease.

Health professionals in Denmark recommend that patients have vitamin D levels of 50 nm/L. That is two thirds the level that doctors recommend in the United States. Based on the findings in this study, they may encourage their patients to consume more vitamin D in the future.

Borge Nordestgaard is the Chief Physician of Clinical Biochemistry and professor at the University of Copenhagen?s Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences.??Nordestgaard said that the study is compelling and will likely force health care providers to rethink their recommendations about heart health and vitamin D. However, he said that more research will need to be conducted before researchers can determine the role that vitamin D plays in heart health. Future studies may reveal that poor heart health lowers vitamin D levels, but vitamin D deficiency doesn?t necessarily contribute to heart disease.

Not many foods have high levels of vitamin D. However, people can readily buy vitamin d supplements at pharmacies.

TEMPE, Ariz.-Perhaps inspired by Arizona's blazing summers, Arizona State University scientists have developed a new method that relies on heat to improve the yield and lower the costs of high-energy biofuels production, making renewable energy production more of an everyday reality.

ASU has been at the forefront of algal research for renewable energy production. Since 2007, with support from federal, state and industry funding, ASU has spearheaded several projects that utilize photosynthetic microbes, called cyanobacteria, as a potential new source of renewable, carbon-neutral fuels. Efforts have focused on developing cyanobacteria as a feedstock for biodiesel production, as well as benchtop and large-scale photobioreactors to optimize growth and production.

ASU Biodesign Institute researcher Roy Curtiss, a microbiologist who uses genetic engineering of bacteria to develop new vaccines, has adapted a similar approach to make better biofuel-producing cyanobacteria.

"We keep trying to reach ever deeper into our genetic bag of tricks and optimize bacterial metabolic engineering to develop an economically viable, truly green route for biofuel production," said Roy Curtiss, director of the Biodesign Institute's Centers for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology and Microbial Genetic Engineering as well as professor in the School of Life Sciences.

Cyanobacteria are like plants, dependent upon renewable ingredients including sunlight, carbon dioxide and water that, through genetic engineering, can be altered to favor biodiesel production. Cyanobacteria offer attractive advantages over the use of plants like corn or switchgrass, producing many times the energy yield with energy input from the sun and without the necessity of taking arable cropland out of production.

Colleague Xinyao Liu and Curtiss have spent the last few years modifying these microbes. Their goal is to bypass costly processing steps (such as cell disruption, filtration) for optimal cyanobacterial biofuel production.

"We wanted to develop strains of cyanobacteria that basically can process themselves," said Curtiss. "A couple of years ago, we developed a Green Recovery process that is triggered by removing carbon dioxide to control the synthesis of enzymes, called lipases, that degrade the cell membranes and release the microbes' precious cargo of free fatty acids that can be converted to biofuels,"

However, when growth of cyanobacteria is scaled up to meet industrial needs, they become dense, and the self-shading that occurs in concentrated cultures, does not let in enough light to produce enough of the lipases to efficiently drive the process. Thus the original Green Recovery was light dependent and maximally efficient at sub-optimal culture densities.

Curtiss' team looked again at nature to improve their Green Recovery method. The process uses enzymes found in nature called thermostable lipases synthesized by thermophilic organisms that grow at high temperatures such as in hot springs. These thermostable lipases break down fats and membrane lipids into the fatty acid biodiesel precursors, but only at high temperatures. The team's new process, called thermorecovery, uses a heat-triggered, self-destruct system. By taking a culture and shifting to a high temperature, the lipases are called into action. This process occurs with concentrated cultures in the dark under conditions that would be very favorable for an industrial process.

They tested a total of 7 different lipases from microbes that thrive in hot springs under very high temperatures, a scorching 60-70 C (158F). The research team swapped each lipase gene into a cyanobacteria strain that grows normally at 30 C (86 F) and tested the new strains.

They found the Fnl lipase from Feridobacterium nodosum, an extremophile found in the hot springs of New Zealand, released the most fatty acids. The highest yield occurred when the carbon dioxide was removed from the cells for one day (to turn on the genes making the lipases), then treated at 46C (114F) for two days (for maximum lipase activity).

The yield was 15 percent higher than the Green Recovery method, and because there were less reagents used, time (one day for thermorecovery vs. one week for Green Recovery) and space for the recovery. Thermorecovery resulted in an estimated 80% cost savings.

Furthermore, in a continuous semi-batch production experiment, the team showed that daily harvested cultures released could release a high level of fatty acid and the productivity could last for at least 20 days. Finally, the water critical to growing the cultures could be recycled to maintain the growth of the original culture.

"Our latest results are encouraging and we are confident of making further improvements to achieve enhanced productivity in strains currently under construction and development," said Curtiss. "In addition, optimizing growth conditions associated with scale-up will also improve productivity."

This morning, at minute 48 of a 50 minute information literacy session for an introductory biology class, a student asked me one of those seemingly innocuous questions,

?Why are journals so expensive??

We had spend the past 45 minutes talking about the scientific literature: what is peer review, what is a primary research article, and what happens after an article is published. I took two minutes to discuss finding journal articles and I gave my standard spiel about why students should use inter-library loan instead of paying for journal articles we don?t have: hundreds of thousands of your tuition dollars already pay databases and journal subscriptions. If we don?t already have a copy of the article you need in another database, we can borrow it from another library more cheaply than you can buy it online ? free to you, low cost to us. Besides, the journal publishers don?t need more of your money. Journal subscriptions are much more expensive than magazine subscriptions ? hundreds or thousands of dollars a year for just one journal.

The students? eyes went wide at the last statement about the cost of journal subscriptions. You can get a year of People for just $100, or a year of Scientific American for only $25. So why does a library subscription to the Journal of Co-ordination Chemistry (24 issues per year) cost $11,367 per year?

I believe this graph of journal costs over the years is mandatory for any blog post, presentation or article that discusses journal prices. Here it is. The yellow dotted line is the consumer price index. The top red line is journal costs. From ARL.

Since I had about 90 seconds to provide some kind of answer to this question, my mind quickly raced through the details of the ?serials crisis,? distinctions between journal prices for STM and humanities journals, the rise of the for-profit publisher after World War II, open access mandates and everything else.

In the end, I told the student there were two main reasons why publishers charge so much for journal subscriptions:

  1. The subscription isn?t just for one person, it is so that everyone at the university could (theoretically) read that content
  2. Because they can.

Journals have content (articles, reviews) that scholars and students want. Due to the nature of academic publishing, that exact same content (the results from a particular study or experiment) can?t be found in another journal. These mini-monopolies put power in the hands of publishers as scientists and scholars need access to particular content.

It?s kind of like the way that HBO can control its subscription price. If you want to watch Game of Thrones, you have to subscribe to HBO. You may get it via Time Warner or Direct TV, but HBO can still set the price. The major difference here is that unlike TV shows for entertainment purposes, some scholarly content can be considered vital to the educational and research mission of a college, making it difficult to say NO to.

This may be changing. There have been several high profile cases of libraries saying NO to high priced journal content (more on that next time), and researchers are more aware than ever of the repercussions of publishing in expensive journals. Hopefully this will lead to a greater balance of power between scholarly publishers and the institutions that purchase their content.

Romney, Obama focus on US posture abroad

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are sparring over how best to address U.S. challenges abroad in nearly back-to-back addresses at the Clinton Global Initiative's annual meeting.

Following deadly anti-American protests in Muslim countries over the past two weeks, Romney was to outline plans Tuesday to rework the U.S. foreign aid system, tying development money to requirements that countries allow U.S. investment and remove trade barriers. Obama also was to address top foreign leaders, CEOs and nongovernmental organizations at the gathering spearheaded by former President Bill Clinton.

The event puts the two presidential contenders in front of the same audience on the day Obama also was delivering a major address to the United Nations General Assembly. Both men were drawing contrasts in a presidential contest in which the state of the U.S. economy has been paramount, but which shifted focus this month to foreign policy after attacks in Libya killed four Americans, including the U.S. ambassador there.

In interviews and at campaign events Monday, Romney assailed Obama's leadership abroad, leading a chorus of Republicans in criticizing the president for what they said was minimizing the death of the Ambassador Chris Stevens. Obama, in an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes," said recent violence in the Mideast was due to "bumps in the road" on the way to democracy. Romney on Monday also suggested Obama was leaving American foreign policy at the mercy of events instead of working to shape global politics in America's interest.

At the United Nations, Obama planned a sweeping defense of his policy of engagement overseas. The president planned to "send a clear message that the United States will never retreat from the world, will bring justice to those who harm Americans and will stand strongly for our democratic values abroad," National Security Council spokesman Tommy Vietor said in an email.

Romney's focus on foreign aid was likely to draw attention to the situation in Egypt, a U.S. ally and the recipient of billions of dollars in American assistance each year. That aid has come under new scrutiny in the wake of protests that saw Egyptians scaling the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo. Romney has said he would put stricter conditions on U.S. aid to Egypt's newly installed government, now headed by an Islamist president. The Obama administration reinstated military aid to Egypt earlier this year despite concerns about abuse as the country transitions to democratic rule.

Romney's campaign said Monday that the current system of foreign aid "reflects an outdated way of thinking about the world."

Both Romney and Obama will appear on a stage at the gathering led by Clinton, who just a few weeks earlier was offering a forceful defense of Obama's economic record and plans for the future at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C.

"I think the president's plan is better than the Romney plan, because the Romney plan fails the first test of fiscal responsibility: The numbers don't add up," Clinton said in that speech, one of several jabs at the Republican nominee.

During the last presidential election, both Obama and 2008 Republican nominee John McCain spoke at Clinton's annual meeting. That year, the former president had warm words for both men. He praised McCain's stance on global warming and complimented Obama's approach to a meeting the two had held earlier in the month at Clinton's Harlem office.

After his speech to the Clinton meeting, Romney planned to discuss education policy at a forum sponsored by NBC News. He also planned to join running mate Paul Ryan at a campaign rally in Ohio.

What you Should Know Before Starting your Business Online ...

Starting your Business Online All in good time: Before you invest money in the purchase of office equipment and supplies to start your business online, from home, make sure there is a market for your product or service. There are several stories of entrepreneurs motivated to start an online business, but have a very competitive product (all offer the same product, and then the sale of one of them is difficult for others). Then, spend some time researching the products or services you would like to represent or sell. Remember that an online business will be successful whether or not someone who wants to buy what you are selling.

Dedicate space and time: The idea of working from home, ?in your bathrobe?, is what motivates many idealists to start an online business. Actually, no matter what you can use for your office, but rather, where and when. To succeed, it is important to set aside the common distractions of home, children yelling, etc. Customers do not want to know his personal life but rather want enter into a business relationship. You must show your professionalism protecting the perception the customer has of the company.

Marketing 101: Unlike the screenplay for the movie by Kevin Costner: ?If you build it, they will come?, the customers do not appear. One of the main reasons why online businesses fail is because the owner wants to sell. Before going too far, ask yourself a question: Am I ready to spend my time looking for customers? If your answer is yes, you are ready to move to the next level, otherwise, I would suggest that you review the reasons why he decided to start an Internet business. In addition to the sale, it is important that owners know other ways to sell their products or services. Take time to understand how to use online marketing tools such as social media, email and search engines like Google to help sell their products.

Prepare for the worst: Any new business or enterprise requires a great deal of optimism, but experience teaches us to be prepared in case things do not go as expected. Starting a business online is much cheaper than a traditional business, but also requires an initial investment. Be realistic about the amount of money you have to invest in your business, properly plan and control their marketing costs and thus get better results.

Expect the best: Unlike the above, it is very important to the positive energy and passion that you put into your online business. Another reason why the Internet business from home, can fail is because its founder loses strength. How many of us know someone who started their online business and stayed on the road? You should look for a product or service that you are passionate about. Keep learning new ways to sell and market your product.

Kid Koala bundles working cardboard gramophone with new album, spurs on budding turntablists video

If you've been enough of a Kid Koala fan to have heard his original Scratchcratchratchatch mixtape, you'll remember a sample that mentioned building a "finger-powered record player." Kid Koala, also known as Eric San, certainly remembers -- buy the Limited Edition of his recently launched 12 Bit Blues album and you'll get your own functional, build-it-yourself cardboard gramophone along with a playable disc. The only further requirements are a sewing pin and some hand power. It's cheaper than tracking down the real thing, and a nod both to San's turntablist style as well as the back-to-basics nature of the music. We call it clever and potentially inspiring; just remember that you'll want some proper equipment before you DJ any house parties.

The Apple Maps furor is overblown

12 hrs.

Do not, I repeat, do not use Apple's new Maps app for iOS 6 ? if you live on the Falkland Islands, or plan on visiting in the near future. Seriously, you will be lost.

If you're in Seattle, or any other major U.S. city, you should be fine. In fact, if you upgrade from iOS 5 to iOS 6, you get passably good turn-by-turn navigation functionality ? something you would have had to pay for on the old iOS version ? for free.

That Maps thing that everyone and their mom seems to be yowling about? The criticism is out of proportion to the actual flaws.?

And as flawed as it may be (and we'll get to that), it makes sense for Apple do this.?The iPhone maker decided, sensibly, to push its chief competitor off of one of its main stages, after years of providing a pre-loaded revenue stream.

By swapping out a Google-powered Maps with a more?homegrown one, what does Apple bring??

The big boon for iOS users is?a?free turn-by-turn navigator, which can?get you from Point A to Point B with Siri's robotronically soothing voice and 3-D visuals that are at times so fun to look at, they could prove to be a distraction. (The renderings can be dazzling on highway on-ramps, for instance.)

There's also?Yelp integration: Pop-up star ratings appear on restaurants and landmarks that you search for, and when you click through, you immediately pull up the Yelp page. As someone who can't stand Yelp reviewers but nevertheless uses Yelp data religiously, I look forward to saving time and effort by using this.

Where the "fly-over" 3-D photo imagery?feature is enabled, it looks?great, and delivers higher-resolution satellite?imagery than you could get on the old Maps app.

As far as I can tell, those sponsored landmarks ??the ones?that netted Google some extra cash but never served you any purpose ? are gone. Yes, big?up to Apple for not shoving ads in your face when you're searching for a barber?shop. That was getting annoying in iOS 5, and I'm glad it's gone in iOS 6.

Apple's?traffic reporting is ...?different. Instead of the spaghetti of green, yellow and red that you'd see on a Google map, you see chokepoints highlighted in red lines, and some scary-looking alerts here and there.?I haven't decided yet if it's sensible minimalism or just missing information (and part of me misses seeing green and thinking "Go go go!"),?but you may actually prefer it.

The iOS 6 update brings all of that, for free, and if you don't like it, you can just keep on using ?Google Maps.?

"Wait, what??" you ask. "Didn't Apple kill off Google Maps?" No, and if you don't believe me, click here.?

If you visit Google Maps on an iPhone's Safari browser, you can even tap "Add to Home Screen" and voila, you have a Google Maps Web app that does most or all that the old native Maps app did.?

Google is sure to launch a?native Maps app for iOS shortly?(just like it did when Apple discontinued the pre-loaded YouTube player). When that happens, the map experience will only get better. Through competition. Apple vs. Google in a fight where no matter who loses, you win.

The ugly
But yes, there are flaws in Apple's Maps app.?

Bridges can?look crazy, rural roads can go missing ? more?egregiously, while one train station disappeared in London, an?airport suddenly?sprung up in Ireland.

Besides the bugs, a big Apple Maps issue is the lack of public transit information. Google's database can tell you when your bus is scheduled to arrive, while Apple's new service can't even tell you what bus to take. (There are, of course, many free iOS apps that can, along with the aforementioned?Google Web app.)

In a measured response to the outrage, Silicon Valley heavy (and Apple veteran) Jean-Louis Gass?e explained that, while the maps can be messy, the problem is not cartographical in nature. Apple simply didn't deliver the message correctly:

The demo was flawless ? but not a word from the stage about the app?s limitations, no self-deprecating wink, no admission that iOS Maps is an infant that needs to learn to crawl before walking, running, and ultimately lapping the frontrunner, Google Maps.

Map databases can be improved in realtime,?and?though?Apple and its partners are clearly?having growing pains?trying to merge map data, 3-D renders and aerial photography, that's bound to improve.?Consumer Reports echoes this in a press release, stressing the map database's ability to improve without requiring an?iOS update:

Maps feels like a new application rolled out in beta form.?Given the ease for pushing app updates to users and the server-side nature of Maps (meaning, the maps and other data are downloaded on the fly as needed), a rapid evolution is quite possible.

As a free application, Maps is definitely a welcomed addition to the iPhone universe, although at this moment, it does not compete well with established, third-party nav apps nor dedicated portable navigation devices.

So, let's review the facts:?

A) There are flaws in Apple's Maps database.

B) These flaws very likely do not affect you in any way.

C) These flaws will be fixed and served up without you updating any software.

D) There is a lack of public transit information, which may or may not affect you, but is partially remedied by apps.

E) You now get free turn-by-turn navigation and instant links to Yelp pages ? and no ads.

F) GPS-enabled Google Maps are still?available on iPhones and iPads?for free, through the Safari browser.

G) A Google Maps app for iOS will likely be here soon, too.

Now that you know all of that, are you still mad? Or are you asking yourself, why was I ever mad? Let me know. I don't want to apologize for Apple on this ? in fact I agree with Jean-Louis Gass?e and Consumer Reports, going so far as to say that?Apple should publicly brand Maps "beta" software, like Siri ? but let's all calm down.?

It's not the end of the world, it's just the beginning of one new way to look at it.

Verizon?s Motorola Droid Bionic and Xyboard 8.2 will be updated to Android ICS in Q4

While Verizon has already updated lots of its Android devices to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, there are still users who are waiting for their official update. For example, Motorola Droid Bionic and Motorola Droid Xyboard 8.2 users.

Although ICS for both devices was supposed to arrive this quarter, Motorola now says they?re going to get the new version of Android in the fourth quarter of the year ? hence in October the earliest.

What curious is that the Droid Xyboard 10.1 (which, except for the bigger display, is similar to the Xyboard 8.2) has already received its Ice Cream Sandwich fix.

Anyway, let?s hope that both the Droid Bionic and the Xyboard 8.2 will be updated in the first half of the fourth quartet. We?ll let you know when it happens anyway.

MGM Pro-gambling Campaign Spending Rises To $8. 4 Million

MGM pro-gambling campaign spending rises to $8. 4 million
By John Wagner

Developer Milt Peterson stands at the site where he desires to create a high-end casino at National Harbor in Prince George? s County. (Astrid Riecken ? For The Washington Post)
MGM Resorts, the organization angling to operate a casino at National Harbor, has kicked within $3 million to a campaign to expand gambling in Maryland, bringing its total contributions to $8. 4 million.

With MGM? s newly disclosed donation to some pro-gambling group, For Maryland Jobs and Schools, which became public Tuesday, the 2 sides are actually near to parity about what has changed into a full-on television ad war.

At issue is a intend to allow a brand new casino in Prince George? s County, and also Las Vegas-style table games at Maryland? s five previously authorized slots locations. The program can look as Question 7 about the state? s November ballot.

Penn National Gaming, which opposes the expansion plan, has reported giving probably the most: $9. 5 million.

But allies of MGM have ponied up. The Peterson Cos., the developer of National Harbor, has contributed $400, 000.

And a group that features Caesars Entertainment, that has a license to build a Baltimore casino, has contributed $1. 1 million. Though Caesars would not welcome additional competition from the Prince George? s facility, the business says it wants table games, as well as a lower tax rate that is certainly also area of the plan.

The campaign has been coordinated by competing ballot-issue committees, create to take care of the donations of gambling companies along with other interested parties.

The gambling-expansion plan would invite bids for any Prince George? s casino to get a swath from the county which includes both National Harbor and Rosecroft Raceway, a harness track in Fort Washington owned by Penn National.

Penn has argued that this deck is stacked against them, but because Prince George? s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) has championed the National Harbor site, a 300-acre mini-city about the banks of the Potomac River.

The pro-expanded gambling group has accused Penn of acting to safeguard a large-scale casino the business owns in West Virginia, arguing business there can be threatened by another large-scale casino in Maryland. Penn has denied that as a rationale.

Penn also owns a current Maryland venue, Hollywood Casino Perryville in Cecil County.
