Internet Marketing Businesses Might Be Your Key To Success

Many men and women genuinely have no idea where to begin in relation to getting their online business up and running. Many people purchase programs and information on the net that teach them where to begin, but all this information isn?t always complete. One of the main keys of being successful online is ensuring you?re offering something folks are looking to purchase.

Think about what you do when you are looking for something to buy, or even when you only want information. When you actually do a search on search engines like google think about how many sites you actually end up visiting before you find exactly what you are searching for. You should understand that a lot of people most likely take the same steps to be able to find your site. Something you have to understand is that for whatever reasons you end up remaining on a website will be the same reasons other folks stay on a site as well Something you are going to have to do is make certain individuals can find your website easily and also have it created so that people want to invest a long period of time on your web page.

There are a lot of steps to take to be able to actually find a certain web site and you will soon see that it doesn?t matter what steps you take you will probably find it almost impossible to actually locate it in search engines like google. Every once in awhile the only way you will end up finding the website you?re looking for is finding some link on some web site by accident. There will always be folks who wind up on a web site without realizing how they got there, and after looking around they decide this is a web site they?d like to visit again but when they tried to search in the major search engines they cannot find it. Once you find a site, you will need to think about what on the web page persuaded you to purchase their product and you will need to make your own website presentable enough that people will invest in from you.

Obviously the first step is getting to be able to have the ability of finding your internet site in the search engines and this is achieved by doing proper seo for your internet site. Something you need to be aware of should you be one of the individuals who don?t know how to perform proper seo, is that there are Internet Marketing and advertising businesses available today who can in fact wind up doing this for you. For many individuals choosing an Internet Marketing Company in order to get better search engine rankings is one of their better options so long as you are making more cash than you have to pay them each month.

You ought to of course keep in mind that properly optimizing your internet site is something you can do with proper information but for individuals who don?t have the technical knowledge, hiring a company to do it for you may be your best bet. So long as you are able to afford it, and you will get your cash back in a specific amount of time, it may be worthwhile.

Tanger, Gonzales Combine To Tax That Man Behind The Tree

?Don?t tax you, don?t tax me, tax that man behind the tree.?

- Sen. Russell Long (D-LA)

This afternoon, we saw a glittering example of insider dealing and tourist-trap economics when the City of Gonzales, responding to a request by the people who run the Tanger Outlet Mall, agreed unanimously to bump the city?s sales tax from 8.5 percent to 9.5 percent on Tanger property.

WAFB-TV had the story?

?Oh hell no, we not raising the taxes,? that?s the honest answer from an out-of-town woman, who sometimes makes the trip to the Tanger Outlet Mall in Gonzales, to find a good deal.

To the dismay of shoppers we spoke to, officials at the outlet mall asked the city to approve a one percent sales tax increase for only their stores. However, Tanger employees say many of their tenants support the tax.

Tanger?s management wants to enhance the property, and bring in new tenants. In fact they say when one store closes, several are waiting to move in. Right now, they are short on vacant space.

The Gonzales City Council unanimously passed the one percent sales tax for stores at Tanger Outlet Tuesday afternoon.

?We want to make sure that people can get in and out easily because if you can?t access it, you?re not going to use it,? said Clay Stafford, Finance Director for the City of Gonzales.

Stafford says the city looks at the tax increase as a win-win. If approved, the current 8.5 percent sales tax would increase to 9.5 percent. Stafford says the city has been looking a way to fix Highway 30 and this would give them the money.

?Not just at Tanger, but looking down at interstate interchanges and further down Highway 30 making improvements,? said Stafford.

It seems that better than two-thirds of Tanger?s customers come from outside Ascension Parish, much less the city of Gonzales. So the city is essentially pillaging the pockets of Baton Rougeans, Kennerites, Metairieans and Houmans ? and other visitors, to the tune of a 12-percent hike in sales taxes at Tanger in order to finance roads around the outlet mall.

Which sounds reasonable. Except the measure passed at the Gonzales city council wasn?t some temporary tax increase to finance a new entrance to the mall. It?s a permanent tax increase that will fund Lord-knows-what after that entrance is built.

And Tanger says they?re going to expand to put six or eight new stores in once that entrance is installed.

Maybe this is an economically sound strategy. Maybe the new stores will do well because traffic conditions getting in and out of Tanger will facilitate more customers.

Or maybe Tanger is pricing themselves out of the market, and using the Gonzales city council to do the dirty work for them. After all, there?s an outlet mall opening up in New Orleans soon. And while the mall in New Orleans East will be counting on crony-capitalist TIF (tax increment financing) treatment in an effort to enlist the City of New Orleans in assuming the economic risk of its construction, folks in Metairie and LaPlace and Mandeville might decide it?s closer and nicer and has better stores than Tanger does ? and a 9.5 percent sales tax is outrageous. We don?t know what the sales tax at that new mall in New Orleans would be; in Orleans Parish the sales tax rate is 9 percent, and it would be hard to imagine setting up a special tax rate higher than what Tanger will have.

Of course, there?s another element to this ? which is that you can buy stuff online without having to pay any sales tax. And if the city council and the folks at the mall are out to drill their wallets for as many tax dollars as they can find, it?s entirely possible the 70 percent of Tanger?s customers who don?t come from Ascension Parish might decide to save the time and gas money and just fire up the laptop to look for a new shirt. After all, they?ve just gotten a great indication of just how much they?re appreciated by Tanger and Gonzales; surely that goodwill offensive won?t go unrewarded as those consumers exercise their right to vote with their pocketbooks.

Most of all, though, it?s just bad form for politicians and real estate developers to be gouging hard-pressed consumers in the midst of a slow economy ? particularly when they know most of the people they?ll be affecting don?t have the ability to participate in the political process that produced that tax hike. We ought to expect more than this.

Discovering the best Real Estate Agents | SF Real Estate Today

by Doherty

For most of us ?it is? the ?biggest? financial transaction we are involved in . Selling or buying a home can be a complicated process but that process can be made much ?simpler? with the ?aid? of a professional realtor.

Yet how does one go about sorting through the myriad listings of real estate agents? How do we select a realtor qualified to handle the sale or purchase of our home ?

Midland Storage wants you to ?think about the following? tips for finding a qualified realtor.

* ?Basic Credentials? .?You want an ?graduate from a credentialed Medical School? to ?manage? your health ?issues? . ?(I know I would not want the guy from Wal-Mart photo lab doing my prostate exam just because he stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night. ?I actually would not want anyone to do this sort of exam on me, so forget my prostate point.) ?You ?most likely want? a CPA to take care of your tax problems . (You don?t want the Capone Brother Tax and Moving Company to do it.) ?So, make sure your realtor is a ?credentialed professonal too? . Are they a member of the National Association of Realtors? ?Request? to see their license and any specialty certifications. ?The respectable ones will be proud to ?reveal to? you they are trained and qualified to help you deal with this major life situation. ?The ?shadier ones of the bunch? will probably not deliver much more than a notarized napkin from the Lego company.?

* ?Full-time?? Nothing against ?humans? who do real estate on the side, but?you will want someone ?regularly? engaged in the ?business of real estate? on a daily basis. This ?will ensure that? an agent will be familiar with current market conditions, selling prices, new developments and past histories of homes on the market. Full time agents are also ?up to date? on existing laws and regulations, including any laws or code statutes particular to your local community. ?These ?real estate rules? do ?tend to shift? and you want a full-timer who has the time to stay on top of the legalities so they don?t ?unintentionally get? you stuck in a negative spot.

* ?High Performers?? ?Some Good Questions: ?How many homes and properties ?has this person? sold in the past ?year? ? ?What is? the average time ?this agent?s? listings have been on the market before selling? For the ?houses? they?ve sold, has there been a ?major difference? between the asking price and the selling price? How familiar ?is this agent? with the type of home or property you ?are selling? ? A commercial property specialist probably ?is not? the ?ideal? choice if ?you are attempting? to sell or buy a residential home.

* Know what the letters mean. ?In real estate terminology, you?ll see these designations.?
CRS = Certified Residential Specialist. Extensive training in residential real estate sales.
ABR = Accredited Buyers Representative. Additional certification in representing buyers in real estate transactions.
SRES = Seniors Real Estate Specialist. Specializing in the 50+ age market, such as retirement communities, etc.

Knowing these distinctions might aid you in making wise choices from the outset.

* How long have they been in business? ?As one real estate expert put it, ?If they?ve been in business less than five years, they?re learning on you.? Try to find a veteran agent who has a good number of current listings. In particular, listings that mirror the type of property you?re trying to buy or sell. If you have a luxury home to sell, find an agent with experience in that market. If you?re trying to buy farm land, find a realtor with a working knowledge and client base in the rural market.

Midland Self Storage wants you to get top dollar for the property you?re trying to sell.

Making E Learning Course Design Work

Article Directory :: Reference & Education Articles

Effective, successful e learning is the aim of every course designer. Yet ask most learners and these two words are not the ones that will immediately come into their minds when describing their experience of taking an e learning course.

While not all e learning is dreadful, too many examples are; and, as most learners will tell you, these bad examples are boring. Usually deathly boring. So what can we do with our e learning course design to make sure it works and is successful for both learners and the organisations they work for?

Most e learning course designers want to make their e learning interesting and engaging and many look to authoring tool interactions and multimedia to help them achieve this.

On the face of it, this seems like a good solution. After all, having learners do something every few screens of the course surely has to be better than just having them read content, doesn't it? Initially, yes. But the problem with this approach is that learners soon become bored. For example, dragging and dropping an object across the screen seems fun and interesting the first couple of times you do it, but once you've done it twenty times, it doesn't seem that clever anymore.

In fact, it doesn't take learners long to realise that the use of multimedia and interactions is really just a way of covering up a deeper problem - too much focus on content.

When course designers create classroom training, they have numerous options available to them. It is relatively easy to create imaginative classroom exercises and activities when you know you will have a group of people who can engage and interact with each other.

As an instructional designer, faced with a blank computer screen, the challenge is far greater. How do you make looking at this screen interesting and engaging for your learners without spending pots of money and taking months of development time?

Chances are you will take the current conventional route and fill that screen with content and then add something like a picture, graphic or interaction to make it more attractive and interesting.

If you decide to take this approach (and most designers do) then it's likely you will quickly see the need to keep lots of screens of content well-organised and structured. Before you know it, you are quickly sucked into a content-centric approach to development.

And once you go down this route you are well on the way to creating the online equivalent of a glorified book or a high end PowerPoint presentation. While both end results could look very professional and attractive, they are unlikely to make for effective learning.

Instead, e learning course designers would do much better to focus their attention away from highly structured content with added multimedia and interactions and focus instead on creating meaningful scenario-driven approaches to learning that are both memorable and motivating to learners.

OU Baseball: Sooners beat Baylor 7-2, advance to Big 12 championship game

Oklahoma needed none of its previous Big 12 Tournament drama Saturday, no ninth-inning magic acts.

Making his first appearance of the week, the Sooners designated hitter crushed two long home runs, staking OU to an early lead in a decisive 7-2 win.

Oberste, in and out of the lineup much of the season, drilled a three-run shot to in the second inning for a 3-0 Sooner lead, then launched a solo shot in the fourth that landed inside the parking garage beyond left field at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

Now 38-21 overall and 5-0 against the regular-season conference champion Bears, OU advances to Sunday?s 1 p.m. championship game opposite the Missouri-Kansas winner.

This will be the Sooners? first title game appearance since 1997, when they won the Big 12?s inaugural tournament.

Max White added a two-run double for the Sooners, who banged out eight hits ? five for extra bases ? off five Baylor pitchers. While the OU offense enjoyed its power surge, Jonathan Gray controlled the game from the mound. The sophomore right-hander struck out six over 7 2/3 innings, allowing six hits.

Except from a fourth-inning solo homer to Baylor?s Josh Ludy, Gray cruised until showing signs of tiring in the eighth.

During the telephone interview he described what he knew about Benedict XVI?s 46 year old butler, Paolo Gabriele, husband and father of three, who was arrested after he was found in ?illegal possession of confidential documents.? Like many in the Holy See, the monsignor is scared and still in shock after yesterday?s events.

?

?I have known Paolo for many years; - he confided ? if the accusations against him prove to be true, there will be no one left to trust any more. I still remember when, some years back, he used to arrive at the Secretariat of State?s offices with his black apron, to clean the floors.?

The prelate recounted how at one time he had been the confessor of this man who eventually left his clearing apron behind, replacing it with an immaculate black suit as he went on to become the papal butler, the lay person closet to the Pope, the man who serves the Pope at his table every day. ?I was his confessor at one time and I can say in all faith that the impression he has always given me is that of a man who is in love with the Church and deeply devoted to the Pope, first to John Paul II and now to Benedict XVI,? he added. The person who helped the young ?Paoletto? to enter to serve in the Vatican is the rector of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Sassia, just a stone throw away from Via della Conciliazione and St. Peter?s Square. The Church is dedicated to the worship of the Divine Mercy of St. Faustina Kowalska and is very dear to the Poles.?

?I find what is going on incomprehensible - the monsignor went on to say ? because Paolo was thought very highly of in the Vatican. I have never heard anyone speak ill of him or spread any rumours about him: and believe me this is rare, because unfortunately ours is a world where nasty things are often said and heard.? The monsignor also shared an important piece of information on the alleged poison pen letter writer who was arrested this morning by the papal Gendarmerie, led by General Domenico Giani. ?Paolo always listened to those who wanted to speak with him; he was always kind and smiley with everyone. He never backed away when someone needed his help, when someone needed his support, and I know this from personal experience.? So many of the Vatican?s lay employees confided in him.

But even thought he monsignor fears that the Pope?s butler will end up being used as a scapegoat, he cannot say that the arrest was made lightly - Fr. Lombardi said - because Paolo Gabriele was found in possession of confidential documents. ?Knowing how simple and na?ve he is, he does not strike me as the kind of person who would be capable of planning such an operation, unless he has a schizophrenic personality. And why would he do such a thing anyway?? A good question indeed and one that is on everyone?s lips in the Holy See. ?We must recall that he is married, has three children and a beautiful family. He came to live in the Vatican about a year ago and spends his free time with his children, helping them with their homework. I cannot imagine what motive he would have to throw all the good things and the life he had built down the drain, betraying the Pope?s trust committing an offense as serious as leaking the documents published in [Italian journalist] Nuzzi?s book. I simply cannot believe it and I hope that he manages to prove his innocence. I remember how devoted he was to the Virgin Mary and how faithful he was to the Eucharist.?

The prelate remained silent for a long while, as if he wanted to chase away a thought that had suddenly entered his mind. ?I remember that after gaining the trust of so many in the Vatican, he ended up coming head to head with someone very powerful here?? Suspicions, resentments and above all, so many unanswered questions.

What The Global Standoff Means For Oil Prices

It's Iran again.

Actually, it has never stopped being about Iran, ever since the West passed heavy sanctions and the European Union decided to end all Iranian crude oil imports beginning July 1.

I know I keep going back to this issue, but it's for one very simple reason. The rising tension between Tehran, on the one hand, and Washington and Brussels, on the other, is still the single most serious geopolitical element impacting the global oil market today. And now the matter is finally reaching a head.

Even After Two Days of Meetings

Two days of meetings have just concluded in Baghdad, between Iran and the six major powers (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany). There was some spin applied in the rhetoric before and after the meetings, but the conclusion is strikingly clear.

Absolutely nothing was accomplished.

The next set of talks is scheduled to take place in Moscow on June 18 and 19, but time is running out.

Iran is now looking at losing one-quarter of its monthly oil exports, with no alternative markets for that oil in sight. That's right ? the Chinese have decided against becoming the "importer of last resort" for Iran. And their primary shipping insurers have knuckled under before the sanctions and are no longer covering Iranian crude consignments.

The sanctions have also made it difficult ? on purpose ? for Tehran to access international banking networks to exchange currency from the sales it does make. That means it costs Iran more to use indirect, and often shadowy, ways of moving money, squeezing even further the profits from sales. Rather important for a nation whose national budget is dependent upon oil sales for 90% of its revenue?

Yet as we approach July 1, the imminent problems are not all on Iran's side.

The EU is Going to Feel the Effects, Too

Eleven EU countries import oil from Iran each month. For most of them, the transition to other suppliers is a possibility to make up the difference ? especially imports from Libya, where oil has come back on line quicker than anticipated.

However, for the three European countries most affected, the situation is quite different. Unfortunately, these three nations are also the three southern-tier EU members (at least for the moment) with the most acute financial problems. Greece has been importing at least 30% of its oil from Iran monthly; Spain 14%, and Italy 13%.

Saudi Arabia has agreed to make up the volume difference, but only through the first delivery cycle, and without guaranteeing any pricing floor. The EU still has not worked out how it will compensate for deliveries past that, should the embargo last for any length of time. So what's going to happen?

Iran believes Europe will have to blink first in this ongoing game of diplomatic "chicken." So Tehran has a single objective in these talks: play for time. And, oh yes, stronger sanctions are working their ways through the halls of the U.S. Congress, assuring that the situation for a recalcitrant Iran will only become worse.

Meanwhile, the effect on global oil prices will only become more acute as the embargo kicks in. Oil may be trading at around $91 per barrel (WTI) right now. But that's temporary.

The only reason we have not seen this rise in prices taking shape earlier is because of the current European sideshows following the French and Greek elections. The Continental angst has created ripples of demand concerns on both sides of the Atlantic, promoting a short-term (and emotionally-led) retreat in oil prices.

The pricing reversal in the other direction will follow in lock-step with the collapse in the talks between Iran and the global powers. Already, my Moscow oil contacts are concluding that nothing of consequence will take place there next month, either. Actually, some think the embargo may even help increase Russian imports to Europe. Brussels, however, certainly does not want to become more dependent upon Russian oil, since it is already dealing with the problem of being overly reliant on Russian natural gas.

So, what is the likelihood that those talks will collapse? If I were handicapping that eventuality, I would currently put that collapse as a 90% probability. Why? Because both sides have put down demands that the other cannot meet.

During the initial April meeting in Istanbul, the Iranian delegation required that the West suspend their sanctions before Tehran would discuss its nuclear program. While the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is holding out some hope for a renewed round of inspections, we have been down that road many times before. It is a non-starter. The West will not agree to freeze the sanctions first.

For their part, the U.S. and the EU have laid down three non-negotiable requirements before they will annul the embargo and the sanctions. These require that Iran:

  1. end all purification of uranium (both to the 20% and 3% levels);
  2. move all uranium currently purified out of the country; and
  3. open up the super-secret and heavily fortified underground installation at Fordo near the sacred city of Qom to full international access.

Iran will never agree to the last two; probably not to the first one either.

Absent the rise of another Neville Chamberlain and another Munich-like appeasement, we have a Texas standoff here. And that assures increasing tensions, rising volatility in prices and a very interesting summer in the oil markets.

If you still haven't seen this, I just raised my target price for oil ? significantly. Here are my new projections.

3 kids abandoned in shed near vacant house

These children were taken into protective custody. KGW-TV's Reggie Aqui reports.

By Elizabeth Chuck, msnbc.com

Updated at 5:30 p.m. ET: The mother of three children found abandoned in a shed in Portland, Ore., on Thursday has been located, police said Friday.

"We thank everyone who helped with information," the department said in a statement. "We do not need any additional tips.? There will be no more details released about this case as it is still under investigation."

The oldest of the kids, a boy, is approximately?3 years old. A girl, about 2, and an infant girl, believed to be somewhere between 8 and 15 months, were found with the boy Thursday morning, authorities said.

Around 9:30 a.m., a man called 911 to report hearing children's voices from a shed behind his house in Southeast Portland.

The shed was on the property of a vacant residence, police said in a statement.

Officers said there were homeless people "on the premises" who told them the children were abandoned there the night before by a woman they believed to be their mother.

The Department of Human Services took them into protective custody and gave them medical evaluations.

A resident on the street where the kids were discovered said she had noticed strangers walking across from her home on Thursday morning, where the empty shed is.

"We have a real homeless problem in our neighborhood, so I keep an eye across the street," Judy Baxter, a homeowner on Southeast Rhine Street, told?oregonlive.com.

She said she saw a man and a woman walk into the backyard of a vacant house on Thursday morning, so she called the property owner to suggest he report them. Soon after, police arrived.

Baxter told oregonlive.com that officials led the kids out of the shed through pouring rain; the toddlers held the hands of state welfare workers, while a police officer carried the infant out.

The kids were wearing coats and had backpacks, she said. Authorities who responded to the scene gave them stuffed animals, she told oregonlive.com.

Jennifer Estus, who lives next to the vacant property, told oregonlive.com that homeless people often sleep in the driveway behind the home.

Police said the two older children weigh 28 pounds, and the infant is 15 pounds. All three have olive skin, dark hair and brown eyes.

YES The Yes Album music review by rogerthat

4 stars This is where the starship trooper called Yes really take off. Steve Howe's presence makes a significant impact, to say the least, and Bill Bruford and Chris Squire lay down a punishing rhythm section. But, upon closer investigation, the starship still seems to run into some air turbulence intermittently. This may be one of the albums that is not quite as good as it plays the first time.

The level at which the band perform their music here is truly awesome. It seems almost as if Howe has become a rallying point for the rest of the band and they rock very hard. The aforementioned rhythm section give the band some serious propulsion while Howe provides the leads, keeping the proceedings engaging. It may be a cliched thing to say, but Howe's coda in Starship Trooper especially makes a huge impression and lingers in my mind for a long time.

As for Jon Anderson, I have never really liked his singing but I can live with that because he is just sort of wailing in the high register without calling too much attention to himself. Tony Kaye is another weak link in the band at this point. His contributions cannot be particularly faulted, but they are also rather generic and don't make much of an impression. It clearly took the arrival of Rick Wakeman to take the band to another level. Overall, the band play their songs so well it forgives a lot and makes the experience enjoyable as long as you are listening 'at the surface', so to speak, and don't analyze it too much.

Compositionally, though, there are a few minor problems. First of all, the long pieces, namely Yours is No Disgrace, Starship Trooper and Perpetual Change lack a bit of organisation. This is an aspect they would improve upon in their subsequent album Fragile. For instance, on Starship Trooper, there is a break in the middle where Howe goes acoustic. Neither does the track develop seamlessly into that moment nor does it resolve particularly well back into the vocal melody. It sort of works on intuition and doesn't jar or annoy the ears, but it could stand to be more convincing. The impression I get is the band are still only putting together sections of music that fit reasonably well. It is not cohesive enough for the coveted masterpiece status, at this point.

Another aspect that takes away a little bit is the emotional side, or relative lack thereof, of the album. The music feels like a very happy, sunny (and, er, epic) version of Led Zeppelin and/or Deep Purple. This could plausibly be said for some tracks from subsequent albums of Yes as well. But there's no Wakeman yet and without his touch of brilliance (see South Side of Sky), the proceedings start to get a bit bland after a while. It doesn't help, of course, that Anderson's voice doesn't transport me to those astral places he dreams of; that might have made a difference.

To be sure, I am not complaining too much about all that. That's obviously why I still feel it deserves 4 stars, 4.5 thereabouts in fact. While there are some flaws that I feel must be highlighted in a review of an album that is often held up as one of the masterpieces of symph prog, these are not serious flaws either and don't take away too much from the enjoyment of the music. The Yes Album falls short of the hype by a bit but is still a solid release worthy of a place in your prog collection.

FIDM Graphic Design Students & Instructors Weigh in on "100 Ideas ...

If you had to pinpoint 100 ideas that shaped your industry, what would they be? When it comes to the graphic design industry, famed writer, Steven Heller, and design critique Veronique Vienne have done the leg work in the book 100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design.

?Written by one of the world?s leading authorities on graphic design and lavishly illustrated, the book is both a great source of inspiration and a provocative record of some of the best examples of graphic design from the last hundred years,? states the book?s publisher, Laurence King.

100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design may be purchased on Amazon, and students at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising will be able to check out the book in person at the FIDM Library.

All 100 ideas from the book are listed below. BEFORE you read this list?. can you guess a few?influential?ideas that shaped the graphic design industry? We asked FIDM Graphic Design Students and Instructors to weigh in on which ideas they consider the most pivotal or interesting:

#38: Found Typography

FIDM San Francisco Graphic Design Department Coordinator, Lisa Hoffman

?Because as I study type and drill down into the details of a character?s line quality, shape, balance, etc? I no longer see the letter form. I often start to see each letter as a small sculpture from this vantage point. The same thing happens in reverse. When I?m tuned into type, I see everything as a letter form.?

100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design: Found Typography

Image sources: 1, 2, 3

#45: Pictograms

FIDM Graphic Design Director, Steve Reaves

?I think if I had to narrow it down to just one, it would be pictograms. They are the corner stone to a visual language, and as we become more global, pictograms, (symbols) like in the past, will continue to be the universal language across our verbal and digital landscape. Apps have already proven that pictograms will be with us well into the 21st century.?

100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design: Pictograms

Image sources: 1, 2 & 3, 4, 5

#51: Motion Graphics

FIDM Digital Media Student, Julie Lee

?Anything can happen with motion graphics. They can be wild and off the wall. It?s a way to bring your imaginative ideas to life.?

100 Ideas that Changed Graphic Design: Motion Graphics

# 1: Books

FIDM Graphic Design Instructor, Randy Dunbar

?It?s appropriate that the book is listed as number one, as it is the thing from which all else sprang.?

#65: Sustainable Packaging

FIDM Graphic Design Alumna, Mani O?Brien (Editor, FIDMDigitalArts.com)

?I feel inspired by the opportunities that designers have to translate important or complicated ideas to a mass audience through effective design. Sustainability is a wonderful example of this opportunity, so I consider sustainable packaging to be a highly relevant example of an idea will continue to shape the graphic design industry.?

Search for Romney running mate in audition phase

(AP) ? Mitt Romney's vice presidential search has entered a new phase: auditions.

As his campaign evaluates potential running mates, Republicans with a possible shot at the No. 2 spot are starting to engage in unofficial public tryouts for the traditional vice presidential role of attack dog.

Such possible contenders as Florida Sen. Marco Rubio and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie have had scorching words for President Barack Obama.

Not that any of those who may have landed on Romney's list are talking about becoming vice president. Nor are they acknowledging that they're trying out for the role or saying they've been asked to do so.

Top Romney aides are sworn to secrecy, as are potential running mates and their staffs ? an example of the Romney campaign's closely controlled, no-leaks culture.

How can businesses help themselves during a recession ...

The British Government has announced a raft of measures to aid businesses through the recession, including the Enterprise Finance Guarantee, ?business health checks? offered by Business Link and a variety of schemes to help with staff training. Whilst the Government is offering ?real help for businesses now? in reality it?s taking time to feed through to individual businesses, as the banks are still deciding upon the best ways to use the funds made available to them.

Not all businesses have their own finance directors to provide strategic financial support and guide them through the recession, but that doesn?t mean that sound financial guidance is impossible to find. As a business owner, there are many local initiatives available right now to help you through these tough times, along with business advisors that are dedicated to helping businesses like yours to thrive. There are even professional firms available, such as Orchard Growth Partners, which provide dedicated part-time finance directors to businesses that do not employ a high-calibre financial expert full-time.

Starting a business during a recession

Whilst it may seem far too risky to start a business during a recession, anecdotal evidence suggests the contrary. If a business is able to weather an economic storm such as this one, it will be in great shape for the expected upturn. It also means that the business has a model that is likely to be less dependent on high risk lending strategies, and a product or service that is genuinely in demand. It can take time for a new business to find its feet, and having a chance to do that before the market picks up again may well benefit the business in the long term.

Whilst there is a lot of doom and gloom in the media, there are two major differences between this and the last major recession. One is that it is easier to start a business than ever before, and secondly, there has never been such a spirit of entrepreneurialism in our economy as there is now. The internet has opened up access to global markets for smaller businesses, as well as multinational corporations, so everybody has the opportunity to trade on a different scale than before.

Help for new and established businesses

Chambers of Commerce

Many local Chambers of Commerce are pulling the stops out to help businesses to not only survive, but thrive during the recession. Some, such as the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce are offering free director development workshops. Others are offering discounted training for members, whilst some are going the extra mile, such as the Surrey Chamber of Commerce which offers the Spelthorne EZone.

The Spelthorne EZone (Enterprise Zone) is a scheme is designed to help businesses in their start-up phase. It provides a fully equipped office area with reception and secretarial support, along with access to business services and advice. It gives the opportunity for new business owners to share ideas and get peer support from other local entrepreneurs.

Business Link

Another place to look for help is the local Business Link branch. Again, there is a huge amount of support for new businesses, but for those that are already established there is a free Business Health Check that begins with an interactive tool on the business link website. Business Link is an excellent resource for practical advice, and also networking opportunities.

Business advisors

As well as the resources outlined above, there are many skilled business advisors out there who run courses and seminars designed to help businesses succeed; one example of this is the SMART campaign run by Orchard Growth Partners.

The SMART programme is a series of simple steps and tips which businesses can follow to improve business and financial performance. The programme can be carried out by companies using their own internal resources although there are major benefits in getting a fresh view from an outsider such as a non executive director or a flexible finance director. Orchard advocates this as it provides a business with dedicated attention from a financial management expert with commercial business experience.

The worst course of action is inaction

When times are tough it can be tempting to hide away, or just stick to old ways of doing business that once worked well. Businesses have to be creative and flexible in recession, otherwise they cannot adapt to the change in demand. The help is out there, if you want it, the businesses that thrive in this recession are going be the ones who seek advice and are then prepared to implement it.

Why Facebook still doesn't look cheap

NEW YORK (AP) ? If you were thinking of picking up a few shares of Facebook last week, when it went public at a price of $38, you might be seriously tempted now that the stock has fallen $7 in two days.

But forget the dramatic drop. Investors should focus on the only question that matters: How much money will Facebook earn over the next several years, and is that enough to justify its market value right now?

The conclusion is hard to escape: Facebook might be a bargain someday, but not now.

Though it's a rough guide, one way to value a stock like Facebook is to divide its price by its annual per-share earnings. The result is the price-to-earnings ratio. A higher ratio suggests a stock is expensive, and lower suggests it is cheap.

When Facebook set its offering price at $38, the ratio was high ? more than 100 times its per-share earnings last year. It's still high, at 85 times earnings per share, even after a two-day drubbing left it at $31 a share.

The Nasdaq composite index of technology stocks trades at 15.7 times last year's earnings, according to FactSet, a provider of financial data. Apple trades at 13.6 times and Google 18.2 times.

Of course, investing isn't as simple as price-to-earnings ratios. Some companies grow their earnings faster than others, turning a high ratio ? and a seemingly expensive stock ? into a low ratio and a cheaper stock.

If you just looked at Facebook's earnings growth last year, an impressive 65 percent, you'd think it's just such a company.

If Facebook can keep up that pace, its $1 billion in earnings last year will be $7.4 billion in 2015. That would be enough to bring Facebook's ratio more in line with Apple's.

But that's with the stock not rising from $31. If you assume the stock rises 10 percent a year, you have to add nearly another year to that waiting period.

Then there is the problem with assuming that Facebook ? or any company, for that matter ? can maintain torrid earnings growth. One reason Apple is trading at just 13.6 times earnings is that investors don't think it can maintain its 85 percent growth rate.

Just projecting one year out is difficult. Among 10 analysts surveyed by FactSet, projections for Facebook's earnings for next year range from $333 million to $1.7 billion. On average, they expect $993 million.

Facebook reported $3.7 billion in revenue for last year. The average projections for this year is $5.1 billion.

Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group, is a Facebook doubter. In a report Friday, he estimated earnings will slow, and they will be only $3.6 billion in 2015 ? half of what they would be if Facebook maintained its growth rate.

Another problem with the stock is that Facebook may have waited too long to go public.

Think of the gains investors would have made if the company had debuted in 2009, a turnaround year for Facebook. The company had lost $56 million in 2008 but was finally churning out profits. They more than doubled in 2010.

In August 2009, investors trading private shares of Facebook on Sharepost, a secondary exchange, paid $2.40 per share. Though the numbers are only roughly comparable with today's figures, that gave Facebook a market value of less than $7 billion.

The $38 offering price assigned Facebook a market value of $104 billion. Based on Tuesday's closing stock price, that had fallen to $85 billion.

If Facebook had gone public with a market value of $7 billion and that had increased to last Friday's value of $104 billion, investors in the hypothetical IPO of 2009 would have seen their investment grow 15-fold.

Of course, other companies priced themselves at high price-to-earnings ratios at their IPOs and still managed to reward shareholders. But they tended to be younger businesses than Facebook, which was born eight years ago.

Amazon.com went public in 1997, two years after it opened for business. Back then, its business model was online bookselling. The Kindle, video downloads and cloud-computing hadn't been dreamed up.

Of course, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg could dream things up, too. And Facebook has a real business, real profit and real revenue today. But social media is still unproven in many aspects as a business model.

A lot of people use Facebook on their mobile devices, for example. Facebook gets 82 percent of its revenue from advertising, but no one has figured out how to make substantial money from mobile advertising. In what turned out to be very poor timing for Facebook, General Motors stopped advertising on it during the week of the IPO.

You can also turn that argument on its head. Facebook is just getting started. It will figure a way to make money on mobile, and it will come up with businesses and revenue streams no one has thought of, as Amazon did. But investors in Facebook, at least in the last two days, seem to have their doubts.

One skeptic, Scott Freeze, the president of Street One Financial, says he won't touch the stock until it falls to a level justified by its earnings. He says that might be $25 ? another steep fall from here.
