Anna Frajlich, "The Legacy of Ancient Rome in the Russian Silver Age."

Rodopi | 9042022515 | edition 2007 | PDF | 221 pages | 1,1 mb

The Legacy of Ancient Rome in the Russian Silver Age analyzes the forms involved in creating the Roman image and explores its functionality within the given poetic system. In addition to the formal analysis, the background and the stimulus leading up to the composition of a particular poem are explored, as well as allusions to legends, myths and Rome's geography and architecture. Moreover, this study considers the function of the Roman text in Russian Symbolist poetics and the works of the individual poets. Finally, the relation between the Roman and Petersburg texts of Russian literature is explored, since many of the Russian Symbolist poets found in Rome a perfect metaphor for their studies of the city and "urban" poetry.

President Obama doesn?t play enough golf

According to this website, Barack Obama has hit the links 91 times since taking the oath of office in 2009. That is a record and he has 13 more rounds scheduled during his current 17-day Hawaiian vacation. Talk show host Joe Pagliarulo spent several minutes discussing Obama?s golf habit the other day while filling in for Sean Hannity, and he is not alone in the almost universal condemnation of Obama?s apparent disregard for the responsibilities of the office of president. Those on the left, like Chris Matthews, think Obama is failing in his primary objective as legislator in chief. Those on the right cite this supposed dereliction of duty as evidence that Obama cannot handle the job, is overwhelmed and overmatched and should step down. They insist a real president, like George W. Bush, who famously stopped golfing to show ?solidarity with soldiers serving in Iraq,? would respect the office and show the American people that he is at work for them.

I have a better suggestion: Please, for the sake of the United States, Mr. Obama, keep golfing! In fact, I would like it if you went golfing every day. Stay far away from the Oval Office and fulfill your constitutional duty by letting Congress legislate while you avoid doing anything that might be construed as legislative in nature. As I point out in my The Founding Fathers Guide to the Constitution, ?The executive was not meant to be the dominant branch of the general government, Congress was ? and the Constitution as ratified does not allow for unrestrained executive authority. Returning the executive branch to its proper role should be the primary focus of all Americans who want a return to constitutional government.?

To be sure, Obama is breaking modern protocol by his seemingly uninspired executive performance. James K. Polk, president from 1845-1849, was the first to show the American people that he was willing to burn the midnight oil, literally, while in office. He had gas lights installed in the White House in order to work through the night. Abraham Lincoln spent many nights at the War Department during the War Between the States. Grover Cleveland often worked 20-hour days and at least six days a week. And both Roosevelts spent long hours poring over legislation and playing politics.

These men were not alone. From Woodrow Wilson?s ?New Freedom? to George W. Bush?s ?Compassionate Conservatism? to Barack Obama?s ?Hope and Change,? the American presidency has become the staging ground for legislative proposals and agendas. Americans in the modern era demand that ?their? president put his nose to the grindstone and put in 20-hour days. That is the problem. Early presidents, such as Polk, can be excused for working long hours. They answered much of their correspondence in person and did not have the convenience of modern technology or large staffs. Cleveland worked long days in an attempt to thwart the volumes of unconstitutional legislation that crossed his desk. But the others spent many hours trying to transform the general government and enhance presidential authority. The president has become a knee-capper, a ?bully? as Teddy Roosevelt called the office, a man responsible for giving the ?treatments? of Lyndon Johnson. He is now charged with bringing both wavering supporters and opponents of ?his legislation? alike in line. That is appropriate behavior for a king or a dictator, but not for a limited executive. Barack Obama avoids this type of activity (thankfully) and thus has met the consternation of the left and the ridicule of the right. This is one area where he is acting more like the founding generation than not.

US ambassador leaves El Salvador after Senate vote (AP)

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador ? U.S. Ambassador Mari Carmen Aponte is saying her goodbyes in El Salvador after Senate Republicans refused to ratify her in the post.

Aponte has drawn fire for an editorial she wrote in a Salvadoran newspaper advocating acceptance of gays and lesbians, and long-standing rumors of past involvement with a man once believed linked to Cuban intelligence agencies.

She has been serving under a recess appointment by President Barack Obama since September 2010.

Deputy Chief of Mission Sean Murphy will be in charge of the embassy.

Aponte told a news conference Friday she was "proud of the work we have done here."

Aponte is expected to leave El Salvador Saturday, the day her recess appointment runs out.

IBM's Watson shows up for work at Cedars-Sinai's cancer center

IBM's Watson supercomputer is about to begun work evaluating evidence-based cancer treatment options that can be delivered to the physician in a matter of seconds for assessment.

IBM and WellPoint, which is Blue Cross Blue Shield's largest health plan, are building applications that will essentially turn the Watson computer into an adviser for oncologists at Cedars-Sinai's Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute in Los Angeles, according to Steve Gold, director of worldwide marketing for IBM Watson Solutions.

Cedars-Sinai's historical data on cancer as well as its current clinical records will be ingested into an iteration of IBM's Watson that will reside at WellPoint's headquarters. The computer will act as a medical data repository on multiple types of cancer. WellPoint will then work with Cedars-Sinai physicians to design and develop applications as well as validate their capabilities.

Dr. M. William Audeh, medical director of the cancer institute, will work closely with WellPoint's clinical experts to provide advice on how the Watson may be best used in clinical practice to support increased understanding of the evolving body of knowledge on cancer, including emerging therapies not widely known by physicians.

IBM announced earlier this year that healthcare would be the first commercial application for the computer, which defeated two human champions on the popular television game show Jeopardy! in February.

WellPoint partnered with IBM this fall to develop Watson-based applications intended to improve patient care through the use of evidence-based medicine, which is designed to standardize patient treatments by identifying proven best practices. A simple example of evidence-based medicine in action is when a provider automatically places someone who has suffered a heart attack on an aspirin regimen upon leaving the hospital. Cedars-Sinai is the first application of the partnership.

"Where Watson really lends itself to solving problems is information rich opportunities and the information is changing constantly and in various forms, structure and unstructured coming from disparate systems," IBM 's Gold said. "Healthcare fits that requirement exceptionally well."

The Watson supercomputer that beat past Jeopardy champions was made up of 90 IBM Power 750 Express servers powered by eight-core processors -- four in each machine for a total of 32 processors per machine. The servers were virtualized using a kernel-based virtual machine (KVM) implementation, creating a server cluster with a total processing capacity of 80 teraflops. A teraflop is one trillion operations per second.

The iteration of Watson being used by Cedars-Sinai, which will reside on WellPoint's campus and can be accessed remotely over a WAN, is vastly smaller, according to Gold.

"The Jeopardy! configuration was done with a specific purpose in mind. It was an in-memory application designed to respond to a question in three seconds," Gold said. "It had 2,880 cores and 15 terabytes of memory. Most situations won't dictate that level of response time. For a doctor, if the response is in six seconds or 10 seconds ... obviously the implications for the response are more important than the turnaround time."

IBM's Watson supercomputer as it was used for the game show Jeopardy!. The iteration of Watson being used by Cedars-Sinai will be much smaller, but it will have the same capability to ingest and analyze data from disparate systems, both structured and unstructured

Working with speech and imaging recognition software provider Nuance Communications, IBM said the supercomputer can assist healthcare professionals in culling through gigabytes or terabytes of patient healthcare information to determine how to best treat specific illnesses.

For example, Watson's analytics technology, used with Nuance's voice and clinical language understanding software, could help a physician consider all related texts, reference materials, prior cases, and latest knowledge in journals and medical literature when treating an illness. The analysis could quickly help physicians determine the best options for diagnosis and treatment.

Bahrain to try 5 police officers for torture (AP)

MANAMA, Bahrain ? Five police officers will be put on trial in connection with the alleged torture of a detainee who later died in custody, the country's Information Affairs Authority said Friday.

The country's top prosecutor, Nawaf Hamza, said in a statement that two unnamed officers have been charged with torture and mistreatment and three others with negligence for failure to report the incident.

No details were provided about the five officers or the detainee. There were also no details about when and where the alleged torture took place.

The prosecution of the officers follows promises by Bahrain to address shortcomings highlighted in a scathing report on rights abuses in weeks of anti-government protests in the Gulf nation earlier this year.

A special commission authorized by Bahrain's Sunni rulers last month outlined the harsh treatment of anti-government protesters as state security forces tried to put down the largest of the uprisings to hit the Gulf. The 500-page report documented the use of torture, excessive force and fast-track trials by the government.

Earlier Thursday, Hamza said the Gulf kingdom has wrapped up an investigation into an alleged Iranian-linked terror cell and plans to put the eight suspects on trial next month.

Hamza said the unnamed suspects will be tried in the island nation's High Criminal Court on charges of espionage and of having ties to an outlawed group that uses terrorism to achieve its goals.

Bahraini authorities in November accused the group of having links to Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard and planning attacks against high profile sites, including the Saudi Embassy and a Gulf causeway linking Bahrain and Saudi Arabia. Iran rejects the allegations.

Court hearings are to begin in early January.
