Reference and Instruction Librarian/Education - HigherEdJobs

University of Houston-Clear Lake seeks a Reference and Instruction Librarian/Education to provide reference and instructional services.

Minimum Requirements: Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution. Must have at least 6 months of full-time work experience in a academic, public or school library setting. Must possess working knowledge of information resources and of effective search strategies.?Must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a collegial environment and with the public, handling patrons' suggestions and complaints.?Excellent skills in use of presentation software and bibliographic citation software. Ability to utilize social media and new technologies in a library setting, and maintain awareness of emerging trends in information literacy. Must be able to work one night per week and regular weekend rotation. Must be able to drive to other campus locations to present library instruction.?Must be able to maintain regular communications with faculty in assigned subject areas, and to maintain online research guides.

Security sensitive position - must pass criminal history record check before an offer will be made.

Special Considerations: Bachelor's degree in education. Experience in library instruction or other teaching experience at the college level. Experience in government document reference.

Responsibilities: The Reference and Instruction librarian provides reference and instructional services to students, staff, faculty and community users, specializing in education resources. Acts as the liaison between faculty members and students in degree programs in education, with the object of developing relevant collections of print and electronic resources in these subject areas, and developing active learning experiences for students in library instruction sessions. As a member of the Public Services professional team, this librarian participates in library planning and policy implementation, serves on library and university committees, and participates in projects to develop and improve library services. Participates in all aspects of library instructional services, including face-to-face teaching and the creation of course-specific resources, guides, online tutorials, and web pages for use in both traditional and virtual environments.

Collaborates with faculty in order to integrate information literacy into the curriculum and to prepare library-research-related sessions and resources that meet student learning needs. Participates in the development and assessment of library instructional activities and programs. Provides in-depth information and research assistance at the Reference Desk on a daily basis, including one evening per week when classes are in session and on weekends as assigned. Reference service must be offered by email, instant messaging, and other communication technologies. Provides one-on-one instruction in use of print and electronic resources, including the library catalog, databases, reference sources, and Internet resources. Composes and revises collection development statements in assigned subject areas, with input from faculty. Selects electronic and print resources in assigned subject areas that support the university's teaching and research mission.

Participates in and makes recommendations in collection evaluation projects. Takes responsibility for existing collections in assigned subject areas by replacing materials and, when necessary, weeding materials that no longer meet collection standards. Works as a team member of the Public Services unit in implementing library policy and in planning library services. Assists with special projects. Serves on the library team which maintains the library operations as the Federal Depository Library, collaborating on collection development, reporting, and promoting government documents. May be required to drive to other locations to offer instruction sessions. Other duties as assigned.
