So let?s build a situation. You were a high school athlete, an all-conference point guard at your high school. You?ve been playing basketball your whole life and now as you apply to college you haven?t been getting those recruitment letters from the big time ACC school you?ve always dreamed of playing for (NC State, obviously). As you come to the end of your career in high school and you start to see that you will not be playing big time ball, don?t let yourself think this is the end of your athletic career. At NC State there are over 50 club Men?s and Women?s sports ranging from a nationally ranked Men?s rugby team to basketball, Aikido and water polo! Many of these sports get good publicity around the University, for example the Dance Team performs at each home football and basketball game and is seen by 57,000 people!
So if you want to keep playing basketball, or you want to experience a new sport, NC State is the place for you!
I play Rugby at NC State. Rugby is the second most popular sport in the world, but much like soccer, does not get a lot of publicity in the United States. Rugby is a sport that combines basketball, football and soccer into one physically demanding game. NC State has had a rugby team since 1965 and our 7?s team, which is a much faster paced version of rugby, is nationally ranked in the top 25 and competed in the inaugural 7?s tournament last spring.
The team was on national television against Oklahoma during a match last season.
There is no club football team at State (only varsity and their scout team) so as a former football player I urge you to check out rugby once you get into college.
So what if you weren?t a varsity athlete in high school, but you are still interested in playing a club sport? Definitely give a sport of your interest a chance, especially because most of these sports were probably not offered at your high school, like paintball or skateboarding!
There are over 50 sports waiting for you to join them! Check out this page for a complete list. And as always, Go Pack!
