Monique Frausto: Latinas Emerge in the Plus Size Modeling Industry

2012-06-29-30wl3zb.jpeg
(Left to Right: Natalie Monet, Nicole Esperanza Zepeda, Jakaliene Rivera, and Danielle Zavala.)

Full Figured Fashion Week has come and gone. It's almost been two weeks since the event and I'm still trying to catch my breath. Hitting the streets of New York City, plus size fashion made its mark in one of the world's most fashionable cities.

As the beautiful models hit the runway, I couldn't help but notice the Latinas who were representing-Natalie Monet, Nicole Esperanza Zepeda, Jakaliene Rivera, and Danielle Zavala.

Then I started thinking of some of the other plus size Latina models who are making an impression in the industry, like Fluvia Lacerda who is known worldwide as the "Plus Size Gisele Bundchen," Denise Bidot and Rosie Mercado who are now taping the second season of nuvoTV's Curvy Girls, and Griselangel Paula who has been seen modeling the latest fashions on Forever 21, Macy's, Lane Bryant, Kmart, Dereon and Baby Phat.

(Left to Right: Fluvia Lacerda, Madeline Figueroa Jones, Denise Bidot (Plus Model Magazine/Photography by Inez Lewis), Griselangel Paula (Plus Model Magazine/Photography by Luke Jones), and Rosie Mercado,

And I can't forget model and editor-in-chief of Plus Model Magazine-Madeline Figueroa Jones. As the shopping editor of this groundbreaking online magazine, I am often inspired by her passion.

"Makes me very proud to see Latina models on the runway and making headlines. As a very proud Latina myself I'm encouraged when I see these young ladies reaching their dreams and being visible for young Latina girls to see them. I wish I had these types of models to inspire me when I was growing up," said Jones.

In my blog Curves and Chaos, I've written about my struggle with accepting the body I had in high school. So, I know how she feels! I used to think I was fat as I weighed a mere 120 lbs at 5'6, often comparing myself to the girls in the magazines. I wish I had someone to look up to, like Jakaliene Rivera who just won Seventeen Magazine's 2012 Fiercly Real Model Search.

When I asked her what advice she would give to aspiring Latina models she replied: "Go for it! Anything is possible. Follow your dreams. If you have passion and drive it's awaiting you. Dream big and never give up. Embrace your curves."

Danielle Zavala, who was recently featured in Latina Magazine, was crowned Mrs. Plus America in 2011. She has been modeling for two years and feels that the presence of Latina models is slowly picking up. Fellow model Natalie Monet has been in the game for three years now and feels the same way I do.

"There are only a handful of Latina plus size models out there and I think we need a stronger presence," said Monet.

I wonder why this is? Nicole Esperanza Zepeda feels it might have something to do with our culture.

"Our culture is incredibly family-oriented.? Our lives revolve around love, incredible work-ethics, and amazing food.? But, many of us are middle to lower class.? The reality of us taking risks to pursue a career in modeling, or the arts, is unfathomable," said Zepeda.

The only way she sees Latinas stepping up to follow their modeling dreams, is if others pave the way for them. In my opinion, I think they're all doing an amazing job so far!

For me these women are more than plus size models; they're a representation of today's hard working, accomplished, perseverant, and proud Latina. They're proud of the curves they were born with and they want nothing more than to see more women like them in this industry.

Professional Electrical Services for Home Improvement is Best ...

Professional Electrical Services for Home Improvement is Best Practice?

If you?re a homeowner about to begin a home improvement project or upgrade, such as a remodeling or a complete renovation that requires the expertise of a reliable, trained, skill-certified Electrician, make the right decision and call a professional. The safety and effectiveness of even seemingly simple tasks require the attention, the techniques, and the skills set of a licensed professional Electrician. Don?t risk the safety of you, your loved ones, and your new home improvement investment by short-changing on essential Electrical services.

Professional Electrical Technicians (Electricians) specialize in comprehensive indoor-and-outdoor electrical work and are prepared to confidently assess the electrical needs of any home improvement project. They can assist with any kind of wiring; expansion projects; lighting- track, accent, and landscape; ceiling fans; installations of any kind; pools, Jacuzzis, and spas; outdoor patios and gardens; and more. In addition, Electricians can perform an Electrical Inspection for your entire home or special improvement project.
Don?t let a potential electrical hazard put you or your family at risk or cause unnecessary inconvenience with your home remodeling or renovation project. Electrical problems can easily arise and create an unsafe home environment when work is not done right. Professional Electricians work on a wide array of issues including overloaded circuit-breaker panels, faulty outlets, dangerous self-installations, and unsafe wiring.
Important remolding and renovation electrical services that should be handled by a professional Electrician include, but are not limited to:
  • Whole-House Electrical Inspections-
  • check-up on electrical systems you have in place prior to and after remodeling and renovating
  • Circuit-Panel Upgrades-
  • remodeling and renovating often adds more electrical demand, so an upgrade may be in order
  • Breakers and Fuses-
  • be sure these are completely safe and operational both pre and post remodeling
  • Outlets and Light Switches-
  • you may need several that require proper and safe wiring
  • Whole-House Surge Protection-
  • best practice to protect home appliances and major equipment
  • Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors-
  • always a must-have when expanding and/or adding floors, etc.
  • Wiring-
  • air conditioning, pools, Jacuzzis, ranges, dryers, exhaust fans, etc. demand the skilled expertise of a professional
  • Code Correction-
  • anything electrical that requires up-to-code standards should without a doubt be assessed by a professional

Councils turn to green waste fees

Almost a third of councils across England charge to collect garden waste, research by the BBC has found.

Where you live depends on how much you pay with some people paying nearly ?70 a year to have a green bin.

Many councils the BBC spoke to said they had introduced charges to raise additional funds after central government budget cuts.

And the chair of a waste advisory body said more councils are considering charging for the service.

Joy Blizzard, from the Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee (LARAC), said councils faced a "difficult financial climate" where they had to make choices about which services to keep.

Planning to charge

Many councils that have introduced a charge said they have had to cut costs to cope with a reduction in government funding.

South Kesteven District Council (SKDC), in Lincolnshire, charges ?25 a year for a green bin collection.

In a statement the council said: "This will help offset the operational costs of the service and effectively means that those who use the service will contribute towards it."

If you have a big garden and you decide to grow a lot of fruit and vegetables which produces a lot of green waste it's your responsibility?

End Quote Joy Blizzard LARAC

Of 254 councils that the BBC contacted 176 do not currently charge to collect green waste although one of these has begun to roll-out a charge and another, Boston Borough Council, in Lincolnshire, is planning to introduce a one-off charge of ?20 for a bin which can be used to dispose of green waste.

Seventy-five of those contacted do charge and three do not offer a collection service although one, Bassetlaw District Council, in Nottinghamshire, is considering introducing a paid scheme.

The highest fee found was ?69 a year for a green wheelie bin in Kingston upon Thames, in London.

A ?60 annual fee introduced in Wokingham, in Berkshire, in April is currently being reviewed by the borough council after the authority received 1,000 complaints.

Sheffield, in South Yorkshire, charges ?57.60 for an annual green bin collection.

Backlash against charges

The "taxation through the back door" was condemned by the Taxpayers Alliance and the local Lib Dem party when it was introduced.

In Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, a local pensioners' group criticised the introduction of garden waste charges claiming elderly people without access to a car would struggle to take their waste to the tip.

In London, Merton Council faced a similar backlash after introducing an annual charge of ?65, while in Ealing more than 5,000 residents signed a petition over a ?40 annual levy.

Creating the perfect compost

  • Combine a mixture of soft, green material (vegetable peel, grass, weeds etc.) and dry, brown material (twigs, paper, straw etc.) in roughly even quantities
  • Place woody material at the bottom and alternate layers of different materials at least 30cm deep
  • Shred larger items and if the mixture is very dry, spray it with water - but do not soak. It should feel as dry as a wrung-out sponge
  • Keep adding to the pile regularly and when the bin is full, it will start to heat up as decomposition begins
  • After about two weeks mix up the contents with a garden fork and add water if necessary. Turn regularly and the compost should be ready in two to four months

But according to Ms Blizzard even a small garden can accommodate a compost heap.

She said: "Composting is the most environmentally friendly way to get rid of green waste.

"It is better than running a fleet of vehicles to collect it and sticking it in landfill.

"It often comes down to a choice for councils - do you keep an old people's home open, spend money on meals on wheels or collect green waste for free?"

When Rushcliffe Borough Council, in Nottinghamshire, introduced green waste charges of ?25 a year, it said it was a way to raise additional income.

Other money raising measures, including introducing car parking charges and raising council tax were dismissed but grants to community sports programmes were reduced and charges increased for home alarms.

Subsidising garden owners

Ms Blizzard added if people lived in homes without gardens they were subsidising the cost of green waste collections for those with gardens.

"If you have a big garden and you decide to grow a lot of fruit and vegetables which produces a lot of green waste it's your responsibility," she said.

Aylesbury Vale District Council, in Buckinghamshire, has begun to roll out a charge of ?36 a year for a new garden waste collection service.

The council said: "Having carefully reviewed our service, we cannot offer the garden waste service without a fee, because it would dramatically increase our costs.

A problem with waste

Aylesbury Vale District Council has a problem with getting rid of its waste.

Figures from two years ago show it only managed to recycle 21% of its rubbish - low compared to neighbouring boroughs like South Oxfordshire (65%).

It plans to raise rates from 21% to over 50% in two years and is introducing a system that includes charging for green waste collection.

It is hard to see how charging would encourage those who currently do not recycle to start, though the council believes it is the best method.

Coupled with this is the prospect of a new waste incinerator in Calvert, approved in spite of huge opposition. This plant will need to process 300,000 tonnes of waste a year to hit targets - the entire county of Buckinghamshire produces around 240,000 tonnes annually.

Protesters worry the vast appetite for materials this plant will have will see little incentive to recycle more.

"We think that it's better to offer a paid-for service to those residents who want it and are prepared to pay for it, rather than charge everyone for a service they may not use."

Across England charges for green waste varied widely:

  • In Cambridgeshire no councils charge for green waste collection;
  • In Suffolk two of the seven councils - Mid Suffolk District Council and Babergh District Council - charge ?40 a year to collect garden waste;
  • In the west of England 12 of 17 councils charge, with fees varying from ?26 to ?45 annually;
  • Manchester and Liverpool city councils and Lancashire County Council do not charge;
  • Cornwall Council charges, as does Exeter City Council, Torbay Council and Teignbridge Council but Plymouth, North Devon and South Hams councils do not;
  • In the Yorkshire and Humber region 20 of 22 councils do not charge;
  • In Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire 17 of 18 councils the BBC spoke to do not charge although one is currently rolling out charges;
  • Across the North East, Cumbria and Cheshire 18 councils do not charge and four do;
  • In the West Midlands two of 25 councils charge;
  • In Hampshire, Dorset, Berkshire and Oxfordshire, 23 councils charge, eight do not and one does not offer a green waste service;
  • In the East Midlands, of those councils that responded, one council is planning to introduce a charge, nine charge already, one does not offer the service and 18 do not charge;
  • In London, 25 local authorities do not charge and eight do;
  • In Northamptonshire, of the four councils that responded, one charges and three do not;
  • In Norfolk, all seven councils charge.

Separate research by the Association for Public Service Excellence (APSE), which advises councils across the UK on service provision, found around a quarter of UK councils charged for green waste collections.

Of 109 responses collected earlier this year the number charging for green waste collections was 26.7%, with 4.7% planning to introduce a charge in the next one to two years.

Google's Project Glass gets some more details

Google Glass

Google's Project Glass has been one of the most anticipated and hyped projects to come out of Google in quite some time. After a rather epic demo the company finally gave us a slightly deeper look at the wearable computer of our (supposed) future. Inside is the usual set of components you'd expect inside any mobile phone. There's a "powerful" CPU and "lots" of RAM (though, there was no mention of specifics) alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless radios for pulling in data. There's a mic for voice commands, a speaker and a camera, which can also be controlled by the touchpad that lines the side of the wearable device. All of those components sit off to one side, though Google says they're still well-balanced and actually lighter than some pairs of sunglasses. The tiny transparent display doesn't actually sit directly in front of your eye. It's slightly above your line of vision, so that it shouldn't interfere with your normal life.

Sergey Brin had three different prototypes on stage -- a light blue pair, a white pair and a black pair -- indicating that personalization and style were concerns. And that's a good thing since Glass is meant to be worn in public. Ultimately Google hopes that the project will be the next step in its quest to make information quickly and universally accessible. The ability to capture images from the first person perspective seems to be key to the device. In a new demo video, a new mother waxes about how hard it is to capture those perfect moments with her child. She "smiles at faces not devices" which makes sticking a D5 in the baby's face a bad idea.

If you're impatient and lucky enough to have been at IO (and live in the US), you can actually pre-order an Explorer Edition of the wearable computer for $1,500. The dev focused units will be shipping early next year. But, be warned, this is not a mass consumer item and will likely be more than a little rough around the edges.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

Jelisa Castrodale

"Gerrard," the barista said, pushing an oversized iced coffee toward the corner of the counter.

"Gerrard?" she asked again. "Gerrard? Or Gerald? Is it Gerald?" It sat unclaimed as cappuccinos and half-caffs came and went. "Hey, you," she said, nodding when I finally looked up. "Your coffee is thawing."

It was the name on my shirt. Gerrard. My No. 4 England home jersey, still wrinkled from being balled up and thrown across the coffee table on Sunday afternoon and still unfamiliar, despite the ongoing Euro 2012.

"Don't you know who Steven Gerrard is?" I wanted to ask, ranting about his passing, his delivery and his accuracy. "And why aren't you watching Spain-Portugal," I'd say, shoving my live-streaming iPad toward the flavored syrups. Instead, I mumbled a 'thank you' before promptly tie-dying all three embroidered Lions with a stream of spilled coffee.

I've spent the past two weeks immersed in Euro 2012, rearranging my afternoons around the group stages, reading oversized tabloid headlines and wondering when Mario Balotelli will do something that results in a homemade t-shirt and/or a detour to a women's' prison.

As a Liverpool supporter, England has always been 'my' national team, even though I have zero in common with the Three Lions other than a shared respect for Gerrard, a habit of being consistently disappointing and a willingness to fight someone over a Phil Collins song.

So Sunday's quarterfinal loss to Italy is just another penalty kick-in-the-teeth that will be etched into my ? our ? collective memories, a banner hoisted into the rafters beside 1990, 1996, 1998, 2004 and 2006, the retired numbers of shame. England spent 120 minutes on their heels, making the kind of hesitant, halting passes I haven't seen since prom night.

Despite controlling the pace of the game and the ball possession ? a lopsided 68 percent ? Italy didn't capitalize until Andrea Pirlo's gloriously cocky Panenka penalty kick gently shattered England's psyche, a move so perfectly douchey, he should've just popped his collar and broken up with Molly Ringwald on the way to midfield. It also served its purpose, making Ashley Cole look like Ashley Young and Ashley Young look like Ashley Olson.

That kick, and the two that followed, ended England's Euro vacation and they don't have anything on their national team calendar until, um, John Terry's racism trial. I should be doubled over in disappointment. And I was. I am. But it doesn't feel like my pain.

As much as I align myself with the team, and as many post-loss managerial excuses and sackings I've suffered through, I feel disconnected by both heritage and history. Even the songs feel wrong. I can't yell "I know I am, I'm sure I am" without feeling like I'm mouthing the words to a hymn I don't believe in.

Maybe Italy will be different.

I don't advocate changing colors, especially to the team that just Pirlo'ed all over your upholstery. It feels as uncomfortable as wedging your incisors into someone else's retainer: wrong, unfamiliar, awkward. But after more than a year of paperwork and Google Translate-ing, of apostilles and certified long form birth certificates, I'm three months from becoming an Italian citizen.

I qualify for dual citizenship jure sanguinis ? right of blood ? through my father's family. So after phone calls to long-forgotten halls of records and middle-of-the-night faxes (Thank you, 1990!) I'll check into the Italian Consulate and will walk out with a shiny second passport, like Jason Bourne if he were less lethal and more likely to trip over something in the lobby.

Will Italy feel more like 'my' team after I have a laminated picture and a validated parking ticket? I don't know, although my dad's hair alone should've given him a spot on the reserves.? Football wasn't in the front of my brain when I started this process; it was a way to connect with family I've never known and never will, from my Renaissance painter relative to my great-grandfather to those distant cousins wedged intermittently between the Dolomites.

I don't know if my grandfather, an American citizen, was a soccer fan. The dates on my birth certificate and his death certificate are unsettlingly close together, so we never had the chance to talk about it. My memories of him are limited to his mustache, his dog and one Thanksgiving that has been faded by my mind's own Instagram filter. He shared his name with my dad. And he'll share his heritage with me.

Today I'll slowly try out my new almost-allegiance, as Juventus teammates (and 2006 World Cup winners) Pirlo and Captain Keeper Gigi Buffon try to play the umlauts off of Mesut ?zil and the rest of Joachim L?w's Germans.

Although their last meeting was a 1-1 draw, Gli Azzuri are I Perdenti ? the underdogs. Despite Pirlo's maddeningly accurate passes and the team's 36 combined shots against England, they won't have those kind of opportunities against Germany, who won't spend ninety minutes double-billing their defense as their offense.

Buffon has an 85.7 percent save percentage but he's only faced 23 shots on goal in four games; Germany has taken 33 shots on goal, scoring a Euro-leading nine times. Italy has managed four goals, netting half of them against an Ireland team that was weaker than a U2 B-side.

Germany has had an extra 48 hours to rest, recover and prepare. They know what Pirlo, what Mario Balotelli, and what Antonio Cassano are capable of (as opposed to Roy Hodgson, who seriously expected Chia Head Rooney to keep pressure on Pirlo).

I'll be watching, attempting a few tentative cheers for each cross, for each attack, just to see how it feels.

I know that Italy could get by without me.? I'm just not sure it works the other way around.

Genetic variant is linked to obesity and insulin resistance

ScienceDaily (June 26, 2012) ? A large study in people at risk of diabetes has found a direct association between the presence of a small genetic alteration in a hormone receptor and increased body fat and insulin resistance. The results, presented June 26 at The Endocrine Society's 94th Annual Meeting in Houston, suggest an adverse role for a previously described genetic variant, the BclI polymorphism.

"Our findings support the idea that even small variations in hormone receptor sensitivity can have metabolic implications, such as obesity or diabetes," said co-author Bastiaan Havekes, MD, PhD, of Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

"Endocrinologists should not just focus on hormone levels themselves. Taking into account hormone receptor sensitivity could help in better understanding hormone-mediated effects on metabolism," he said.

The inherited BclI polymorphism occurs in the gene encoding for the glucocorticoid receptor, which controls the actions of glucocorticoids, steroid hormones that affect every system in the body. This small variant makes the receptor more sensitive to glucocorticoids, resulting in greater effects with similar hormone levels, Havekes said.

The effects of this change appear to be similar to, although much smaller than, the excessive glucocorticoid exposure that can occur from certain medications or diseases, Havekes said. Such excess exposure can result in weight gain, especially around the abdomen, as well as in disturbed blood sugar metabolism. This exposure most often occurs from long-term use of prednisone or other glucocorticoid medications, which are widely used to treat inflammatory diseases or to suppress the immune system. It also can result from endocrine diseases such as Cushing's syndrome. Cushing's causes overproduction in the body of the glucocorticoid cortisol, often called the "stress hormone."

Patients in this study, however, did not have known excess exposure to glucocorticoids, according to Havekes. He and his co-investigators studied 1,228 adults who participated in one of two Dutch studies focusing on diabetes in the general population. More than half of the study participants had either prediabetes (23 percent) or Type 2 diabetes (33 percent). All subjects underwent genetic testing for the BclI polymorphism.

The researchers found that 519 subjects did not carry the alternative form of the gene, or G-allele, for the BclI polymorphism on either chromosome. Another 540 subjects were heterozygous carriers, meaning the G-allele was present on one of the two chromosomes. The remaining 169 subjects were homozygous carriers and therefore carried the G-allele on both chromosomes.

Those who had the BclI polymorphism on each chromosome had a significantly higher body mass index and larger waist and hip circumferences than did noncarriers or heterozygous carriers, the authors reported. This was reflected by greater insulin resistance, meaning that insulin is less effective at lowering blood glucose (blood sugar).

"Determining an individual's genetic risk profile for metabolic disease is of paramount importance to prevent development of cardiovascular diseases," he said. "Future studies concerning cardiovascular risk profiling should perhaps consider the BclI polymorphism."

Supreme Court muddles immigrant labor issue

Andrew Innerarity / Reuters

Dennis Ramos chants with fellow protesters at a Miami rally to protest Monday's Supreme Court decision that allows non-federal police officers in Arizona to perform immigration checks.

By Allison Linn

The Supreme Court?s decision on Arizona's immigration law may not do much to ease concerns of employers who rely on migrant workers, especially those in states that have passed similar laws.

The high court?Monday struck down several key parts of the Arizona law, including one making it a crime for an illegal immigrant to work or seek work in the state.

But it upheld a portion allowing police officers stopping someone for another crime to check that person?s immigration status.

That could be enough to keep many immigrant workers away from states that have passed similar laws seeking to crack down on illegal immgration, including Utah, Georgia, Indiana, Alabama and South Carolina.

Proponents argue?such laws are needed?because federal lawmakers have failed to come up with a comprehensive solution to the issue, but the Supreme Court reiterated Monday that for the most part immigration law should be left to the federal government.

While the state laws have drawn popular support, they also have faced serious opposition?from some businesses, including farm interests, that?depend on?migrant workers to do?work that citizens and legal residents?either can?t or won?t.

?We don?t support people that are here illegally having a pathway to citizenship, but we?ve got to have somebody to harvest our crops,? said Charles Hall, executive director of the Georgia Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association. ?We don?t have that workforce.?

Hall and others say the fear of immigration checks was?enough to scare some workers away from?states that imposed the tougher laws. He said Monday that it wasn't yet clear how the Supreme Court ruling will affect Georgia's law --?or the rumor mill blamed for keeping many foreign-born workers out of Georgia.

As employers wait for more legal guidance, some expect that undocumented workers will take a wait-and-see attitude.

"It's not going to open the floodgates in terms of workers leaving?or coming," said Michael Fix, senior vice president with the Migration Policy Institute, which has been following the issue closely.

Experts say that despite the nation?s high?unemployment rate, it is hard to find native-born workers to do the difficult, unpleasant, low-wage jobs typically filled by undocumented workers.

?The shortages that these laws create are real,? Judy Gans, program manager for immigration policy at the University of Arizona, said ahead of the ruling. ?The wages would have to go up a lot for there to be an adequate supply of native-born workers.?

In 2011, crops?were left rotting in Georgia?fields when?workers who?normally migrate through the state bypassed it because of rumors of a crackdown driven by the state's new law.

Hall?said efforts to recruit domestic workers?largely failed, as?native-born workers had neither the skill nor?endurance for the?job.

This year, he said Georgia farmers were able to recruit enough workers after a judge blocked two sections of the state law.

The 11th Circuit Court of Appeals has said it would rule on the Georgia law after hearing the Supreme Court opinion on the Arizona law, so it?s not clear what the effect will be on the next?harvest season in?four or five months.

In Alabama, farmers have complained of a similar problem. An analysis by Samuel Addy, a research economist and director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama, found that the loss of these types of workers would likely hurt the state?s economy more than it would help it.

?The potential for economic growth is reduced somewhat,? he said.

In other states, the backlash from business, the improving economy and the fear of legal challenges has already dampened enthusiasm for such laws. In 2011, 30 states considered but didn?t pass bills that would crack down on immigration, according to?data from the National Conference of State Legislatures. In 2012, just five states introduced such bills, and none have passed yet.

?I think the heat?s off,? said Frank Bean, director of the Center on Research, Immigration, Population and Public Policy at the University of California at Irvine.

The Pew Hispanic Center estimates that about 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the United States as of 2010, down from a high of about 12 million a few years ago.? About 8 million were thought to be in the workforce.

Arizona has been at the forefront of the effort to curb illegal immigration through state laws. Business leaders there say that?s one reason why they actually may be less affected by the Supreme Court decision than business owners in other states.

For one thing, they have been responding to immigration crackdowns since 2007, when Arizona lawmakers passed a law that required many employers to use the federal E-Verify system to check whether employees had the required paperwork to work in this country legally.

Magnus Lofstrum, a public policy fellow with the Public Policy Institute of California, said his research found that as a result of that earlier law, the working-age unauthorized immigrant population fell by about 17 percent, or roughly 90,000 people, between 2008 and 2009.

In addition, he said, the number of suspected unauthorized immigrants who began working as contractors rose by about 25,000 between 2007 and 2009. Under the law, contractors are not subjected to the screening.

The shift toward more contract work could mean lower tax revenues, he said, because informal workers may be less likely to file taxes.

?It?s an unintended consequence, and it?s not a desired one, and particularly in these tight fiscal time,? Lofstrum said.

Other states that have passed immigration laws also have an E-Verify component, although they are not necessarily as strict as Arizona's. Lofstrum said Monday those provisions, which won't be affected by Monday's high?court?ruling, also could make it tough for employers to find workers.

Another reason Arizona businesses could be less affected is because the industry that once relied heavily on undocumented labor, construction, has been in the doldrums for years since the spectacular housing bust. Although there are signs the housing market in Arizona is improving, that downturn still means there?s less need for those workers.

Still, the law may have had other effects.

A 2010 report from the liberal-leaning Center for American Progress estimated that the tourism industry lost as much as $141 million because of people opted not to book conferences and other events there in the wake of the bill being passed.

The state?s major business organizations haven?t taken a formal position for or against the most recent immigration law.

Garrick Taylor, spokesman for the Arizona Chamber of Business and Industry, said they think federal lawmakers need to craft a nationwide solution to the immigration issue, while the Chamber is more focused on healing the state?s economy.

?Our push is that the legislature here at the state level continue to focus on economic recovery and job creation,? he said.

Fresh strawberries from the garden

Fresh strawberries from the garden

These past few weeks had not been too bad. In fact it has been surprisingly beautiful most of the time. It?s a real frustration not to be out and about but to stay at home, hopping around on crutches. But then not all is bad. I had the time of my life watching The French Open and The Queen?s tennis competition on TV. Wimbledon tennis is here now and soon will be London Olympics. Olympics trial is also here. Had just finished watching the Royal Ascot horse racing over the weekend. Then of course I am always very thankful for my blog and all the friends that I made through blogging.

I must say I have never felt so much cared and loved by so many people around, especially my friends here. Every now and then I am surprised with delicious food delivered to my home. There are some that I forgot to take pictures?.*sigh*. Also, there are too many to upload here. You can see that I am very well fed?..*big smiles*. I sure need LOTS of exercise when I can get back on my feet. Having said that, hopping around on my crutches is seriously no joke. It is very tiring! It?s also about balancing act which I am still not too good at. I should have learned some acrobatics before?..haha.

There?s one special friend that really touched my heart! She called almost everyday and she even came by bus which took her at least an hour to get here. Once she brought all the ingredients and cooked here. We had a most wonderful time chatting and laughing. I was so touched by her love! She cooked fried egg noodles, fried rice noodles and a sweet dessert drink and a lot of other goodies.

One of the best food that she bought which I had never tried before was the smoked salmon?.a big piece! It was absolutely delicious eaten with rice or added to salad. She told me she bought it from Costco.

Not only that,?her teenage son even played guitar to entertain me! I feel so honoured?*big smiles*. That?s so sweet of him. He had just taken up guitar and I am really so happy for him, proud that he is willing to learn.

On another occasion, she made rice dumplings and asked a friend to bring to my house. It has been a LONG time since I last ate one. So you can imagine how thrilled I was to eat them. They were really delicious. My family liked it very much. It was dumpling festival on 23 June and I heard that glutinous rice and dried bamboo leaves which are needed to make these dumplings were all sold out in the Chinese supermarket!

Those back home in Malaysian and other Asian countries are very lucky. You can buy them from the shop any time but not over here in Aberdeen. We have to make if we want to eat. In a way it is good because we learn how to make a lot of food that we miss. This is really the place where I have learned a LOT of cooking and baking?.*big smiles*.

Beautiful and delicious chocolate pizza

One day, my door bell rang. Oh wow?.so surprised to see a dear young friend at the door with a bag of hot food for my lunch. Her mom cooked the food. That was the best lunch that I had after my leg injury. Everything tasted so delicious. We had salmon, dumplings (boa zhi) and pork rib soup (pictures here above). I ate a big plate of rice?..*big smiles*

Roasted duck wrap

Roasted duck wrap

On another occasion, I received a phone call from a friend. She said she was coming with roasted duck, her signature dish. Oh, I really love her roasted duck. It?s simply the best. Immediately, I told myself I need Chinese pancakes to make duck wraps?.mmm. My girl helped me to make the pancakes. We enjoyed it very much. My family always love duck wrap. It?s so fun to eat. I kept the bones for making rice porridge. Nothing is wasted!

Rhubarb pie

Rhubarb pie

Looks like most of the food are savoury. But no, wait. A friend came by with rhubarb and almond pie. It must have been fresh from the oven and straight to my house. It was still very warm when she came. That was one of the best pie that I have ever eaten! We almost finished the whole pie after she left. I never knew rhubarb makes such a wonderful pie. My family liked it very much. I have to learn how to make it. She had just given me the recipe??.yay. She told me I can use apples or pears to replace the rhubarb if I want to.

Chocolate mint cheesecake

I also received a cheese cake. It?s the biggest cheesecake I have seen! Must be 12 inches across. It?s chocolate mint cheesecake. It?s very rich but very delicious. I love mint so I really like this cheesecake.

Another lovely friend came straight from the strawberry farm with a basket of very fresh strawberries! (first picture on top). They went there for strawberry picking. Awww?how I miss that! The strawberries were so delicious?mmm. I actually had them for dinner?*big smiles*. Maybe that?s the way to losing weight?.haha.

Other friends came with food to join me for lunch or tea time. So, you can see how happy I am! I feel so loved, cared for and so pampered. It sure makes my days pass by quicker. I?m just really so thankful to all my friends, and of course my family too.

My girls and hubby had been giving me a lot of surprises with some of their cooking skills. But I must say, my hubby chickened out after a few days. Reason?.he lose out to the girls?.haha. Well, actually by the time he gets home from work, dinner is already there. Lucky man huh!

Life is no fun if I keep receiving and eating only. I had learned to fight my way into the kitchen to cook and bake if I can, with lots of my influencing and negotiation skills of course?.*grin*. Actually I end up more like begging until I won??haha. My girls know that a bored mom is a dangerous mom and a happy mom recovers faster!

I?m really happy that I was able to make quite a few delicious food, with lots of help from my girls. They have been fantastic. I think it?s very good because it?s hands-on training for them. I am just so proud of myself that I can still cook and bake. Won?t show here. You have to come back?*wink*. I won?t make you wait long though. Will be back very soon to show you what I made and also the recipes.

Till then, see you in my next post. Hope you have a great start to a new week.

Quote of the day??

?There are no real successes without rejection. The more rejection you get, the better you are, the more you?ve learned, the closer you are to your outcome? If you can handle rejection, you?ll learn to get everything you want.?

"Super Earth" Found Near "Hot Neptune" in Space

Scientists used to assume that if other stars had solar systems, they would be like our own - small, rocky planets (i.e. Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) orbiting relatively close to the star, with gas giants (think of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune) farther out.

So much for that.

Since the 1990s, astrophysicists report they have identified at least 600 stars with planets circling them and found that solar systems like ours are a rarity.

Super Earth

Take Kepler 36, reported Friday in the journal Science.

It's a solar system about 1,200 light-years away, with two very different planets right on top of each other (illustrated above). One's a rocky "super Earth," about 1.5 times as large as our world. The other is a gaseous "hot Neptune," about 3.7 times as large.

They are the closest of any planetary system found to date, and were found using NASA's Kepler probe, which has been planet-hunting since 2009.

Both worlds are so close to their host star that they zip around it in 14 and 16 days, respectively, and are five times closer than the moon is to us.

To put that in perspective, if you've ever been struck by moonrise on a summer night, imagine a moon about 12 times as large high in the sky.

As the NFL deals with well over 2,000 former players who are suing for concussions, the league understandably hopes to slam the door on future lawsuits from current players.

In one specific regard, the league is failing.

An Outsides the Lines report from Bob Holtzman of ESPN creates the perception of a dog chasing its tail regarding the question of whether the NFL is properly embracing technological advances that will help spot whether players should exit a game due to head trauma.

After explaining the work of North Carolina professor Kevin Guskiewicz to use helmet sensors to record in real time the force of each and every blow to the head during practice or a game, Holtzman explained that the NFL isn?t ready to say when or if the Helmet Impact Telemetry (HIT) system will be used.? The league then referred Holtzman to its expert on these matters.

And their expert is ? you guessed it ? Kevin Guskiewicz.

?I?ve been comfortable with the questions that we?ve asked and the validation studies that have been done to this point, and I feel as though we probably could have had this system in place a year or so ago,? Guskiewicz said.

?It absolutely can work in the NFL,? he added regarding the system that North Carolina now uses as a recruiting tool.? ?I?ve been doing it for eight years, so I know it can be done.?

Guskiewicz explained that eight NFL teams planned to use the HIT system in 2010, and that the plug was pulled at the ?eleventh hour.?? Citing an unnamed source, Holtzman reports that the NFL Players Association blocked the use of the HIT system.? Holtzman added that the NFLPA did not respond to repeated requests for an interview.

NBC analyst Hines Ward, who spent 14 years with the Steelers, believes players will be reluctant about using the HIT system.? ??You?re gonna open up a while Pandora?s Box with it,? Ward told Holtzman.? ?For a doctor to read a computer and tell me how hard I?ve been hit and to pull me out of a game, that won?t sit well with a lot of players.?

Ward also worries that the data will be used by owners to justify paying players less money.

Regardless, the NFL?s expert is getting impatient.? ?If we?re sitting here in a year from now and we?re not any closer to have on-field, real-time biomechanics being measured, I?ll be real frustrated, and perhaps ready to throw the towel in,? Guskiewicz said.

Lawyers interested in representing current players in future concussion lawsuit are likely feeling anything but frustrated.? With the NFL?s expert believing that the technology could have been and should have been used in 2010 ? and upset by the fact that it?s still not currently in use ? any player who suffered concussions even after the NFL had a Congress-induced epiphany in October 2009 will be able to argue that, if the NFL merely had followed the advice of its expert and used the HIT system, the player would have been pulled from a game before real damage had been done.

The report that the NFLPA stopped the implementation of the technology in 2010 complicates matters for future plaintiffs.? But that one fact could mean that future concussion lawsuits will be filed not only against the NFL, but also against the union.? (To date, concussion suits have been filed only against the league.)

Regardless, any actual or perceived failure by the stewards of the game to do everything reasonably possible to reduce head injuries or avoid them altogether will provide fodder for an ongoing stream of litigation from the men who currently play the game.? And the league?s failure to follow the advice of Kevin Guskiewicz creates a far more tangible, clear, and defined risk of liability than the Saints bounty program ever could.

(AP) ? Faced with a choice between Hosni Mubarak's ex-prime minister and an Islamist candidate, Egyptians entered their latest round of elections in an atmosphere of suspicion, resignation and worry, voting in a presidential runoff that will mean the difference between installing a remnant of the old regime and bringing more Islam into government.

The race between Ahmed Shafiq, a career air force officer like Mubarak, and the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Morsi, a U.S.-trained engineer, has deeply divided the country, 16 months after a stunning uprising by millions forced the authoritarian Mubarak to step down after 29 years in office.

The two-day vote is taking place under the shadow of political dramas over the past week that effectively mean the military generals who took power after Mubarak's ouster will continue to rule despite promises to hand over authority to the elected president by July 1. The generals took over legislative powers after Egypt's highest court on Thursday ordered the dissolution of the parliament elected just six months ago, and the military made a de facto declaration of martial law.

Using diplomatic language to convey Washington's concern about the latest development in longtime ally Egypt, U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta underlined to Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, Egypt's military ruler, "the need to ensure a full and peaceful transition to democracy."

In their phone call Friday, Tantawi, who was Mubarak's defense minister of 20 years, confirmed the military's intention to transfer power to a democratically elected government by July 1, according to the U.S. Defense Department.

On Saturday, few voters showed the sense of celebration visible in previous votes. The prevailing mood was one of deep anxiety over the future ? whether bitterness that their "revolution" had stalled, fears that whoever wins protests will erupt, or deep suspicion that the political system was being manipulated. Moreover, there was a sense of voting fatigue. Egyptians have gone to the polls multiple times since Mubarak's fall on Feb. 11, 2011 ? a referendum early last year, then three months of multi-round parliamentary elections that began in November, and the first round of presidential elections last month.

"People are depressed, no one is happy after we returned to square one," Abu Bakr Said, a lawyer and a Morsi supporter, said referring to Thursday's court ruling, which wiped out the only elected body in the country.

"We have no confidence now in any election and I know that a second revolution is coming," he said as he waited in line outside a Cairo polling center.

Some said they were voting against a candidate as much as for a favorite. Anti-Shafiq voters said they wanted to stop a figure they fear will perpetuate Mubarak's regime; anti-Morsi voters feared he would hand the country over to Brotherhood domination to turn it into an Islamic state. With the fear of new authoritarianism in the future, some said they were choosing whoever they believed would be easiest to eventually force out.

Outside a polling center at the Cairo suburb of Shubra el-Kheima, Sameh Mohammed, declared: "I am not voting for either. They are all thieves and liars and cooperating with the military." Mohammed, who now washes cars after the factory where he worked closed following the revolution, lashed out at the military, but said he doesn't trust the Brotherhood either.

"They are all gambling with our lives," he said.

Unlike in ealier post-Mubarak votes when Egyptians were confident the balloting would be free, many this time said they expected tampering.

"I don't think Shafiq 'could' win, I think he will win," said Nagwan Gamal, a 26-year-old engineering lecturer at Cairo University who was voting for Morsi.

"I think there will be corruption to ensure that he wins, though I think a lot of people will vote for him," she said at a polling center in the Cairo district of Manial.

There were no immediate reports of significant violations at the polls, which are being monitored by several international and local observer groups. But the suspicion expressed by many underscored a widespread belief that the ruling military wants to ensure a win by the president of its choosing. The military has said it does not back either candidate.

Announcements by Interior Minister Mohammed Ibrahim, in charge of police, only heightened the sense of paranoia and uncertainty. He told reporters that security agencies learned of a plot to carry out attacks on "vital installations" by individuals disguised as police or military. He also said that pens with ink that disappears after 30 minutes were being distributed to voters outside polling stations to use in marking their ballots. He didn't elaborate on who was passing them out or why.

The "pen" rumor spread quickly. At a polling center in the Cairo district of Shubra el-Kheima, the judge monitoring the ballots said the report was fake but that many in line now feared their vote would vanish. One woman wanted to take her ballot outside to wait to ensure her checkmark didn't disappear, said the judge, Mohammed el-Minshawi.

"I am hitting the ceiling. This is a dirty election game that aims to make people lose trust in the process," he said.

There were scuffles between supporters of the two candidates in the provinces of Assiut and Menoufia and as a handful of cases when the names of people who died were still on voters' lists and police and army conscripts voted in violation of a ban on service members from doing so. Three were wounded in exchange of fire in Gharbiya province

Shafiq, a self-confessed admirer and a longtime friend of Mubarak, has campaigned on a platform of a return to stability, something that resonated with many Egyptians frustrated and fatigued by more than a year of turmoil ? from deadly street protests, a surge in crime, to a faltering economy and seemingly endless strikes, sit-ins and demonstrations.

In contrast, Morsi marketed himself as a revolutionary who is fighting against the return of the old regime, promising guaranteed freedoms and an economic recovery, while softening his Islamist rhetoric in a bid to reassure liberals, minority Christians and women.

But multiple factors were playing on voters' minds. Some were angry at the Brotherhood, which was the big winner in the parliament elections, gaining nearly half the seats, but then faced a backlash from many who feel it then tried to monopolize authority for itself. After the past week's court ruling, others were angered by what they saw as the military's power grab.

"The revolution was stolen from us," merchant Nabil Abdel-Fatah said as he waited in line outside a polling center in Cairo's working-class district of Imbaba. He said he planned to vote for Shafiq. "We can easily get rid of him if we want to, but not the Brotherhood, which will cling to power."

Brotherhood supporter Amin Sayed said he had planned to boycott the vote, but changed his mind after the court ruling.

"I came to vote for the Brotherhood and the revolution and to spite the military council," he said in Imbaba, a stronghold of Islamists. "If Shafiq wins, we will return to the streets."

The balloting will produce Egypt's first president since the ouster of Mubarak, now serving a life sentence for failing to prevent the killing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising that toppled his regime.

The winner will be only the fifth president since the monarchy was overthrown nearly 60 years ago.

The election is supposed to be the last stop in a turbulent transition overseen by the military generals. But even if they nominally hand over some powers to the winner, they will still hold the upper hand over the next president. The generals are likely to issue an interim constitutional declaration defining the president's powers, they will hold legislative powers, and they will likely appoint an assembly to write the permanent constitution.

Also last week, the military-appointed government gave military police and intelligence agents the right to arrest civilians for a host of suspected crimes. Many saw the move as a de facto declaration of martial law.

"By disbanding parliament, we returned to square one. We wasted a year and a half," 30-year-old contractor Mohammed Kamel said in the impoverished Cairo district of Warraq. "Ahead of us are four years of ambiguity ... We knew that the military council will never hand power because the generals have privileges they want to protect."

Kamel said he cast a purposely spoiled vote in protest, crossing out the names of both Morsi and Shafiq on his ballot.

Already, the generals have been blamed for mismanaging the transition and they stand accused of killing protesters, torturing detainees and hauling at least 12,000 civilians before military courts since January last year.

School teacher Mohammed Mustafa said he was voting to try to stop the return of the old regime.

"We lost this country for 30 years, and we are not ready to lose it again," he added. "I have no doubt there will be fraud. If there is, I will return to the street to win back my dignity because I won't live as a slave anymore."
